Salut d'Amour, Op.12, is a musical piece composed by Edward Elgar in 1888, initially for violin and piano. Elgar finished the piece in July 1888 when he became engaged to Caroline Alice Roberts and when he returned home on September 22 after a vacation with his friend Charles Buck in Settle, Elgar gave this piece to his future wife as a present of wedding. Alice, for her part, offers him a poem, entitled The Wind at Dawn, which she had written several years before and which is soon set to music by Elgar. The dedication is in French: “à Carice (To Carice)”. Carice is the mixture of the first names of his wife Caroline Alice, and is the name they will give to their daughter born two years later. It was not published by Schott & Co., a German publisher, with offices in Mainz, London, Paris and Brussels, until a year later, and the first editions were for violin and piano, piano solo, cello and piano, and for small orchestra. Few copies were sold until Schott changed the title to "Salut d'Amour" with Liebesgruss as a sub-title, and the composer's name as 'Ed. Elgar'. The French title, Elgar realised, would help the work to be sold not only in France but in other European countries.
