Dmitri Shostakovich Schwartz Jascha Heifetz Scriabin 1922 1925 1937
Three Fantastic Dances, Op. 5, are three dances written by the Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich. Shostakovich was only 16 years old when he composed these dances in 1922 and they are dedicated to a fellow student (J.Z. Schwartz) of Shostakovich who also took piano lessons at the Moscow Conservatory. The premiere of the piece took place on 20 March 1925 at the Moscow Conservatory by the composer at the piano Although originally written for piano, the piece was often played on other instruments as well. A well-known performance is by Jascha Heifetz for violin. These short pieces last only one minute each. The influence of Scriabin is undeniable. Shostakovich had some hesitation about his work and their publication did not occur until 1937, 15 years after their composition. Intro [0:00] I. March – Allegretto [0:07] II.
