Libera Me, Domine (soprano e coro) Soprano: Leontyne Price Mezzo-Soprano: Rosalind Elias Tenor: Jussi Björling Bass: Giorgio Tozzi Wiener Philharmoniker Conductor: Fritz Reiner Recorded in 1959 New mastering in 2021 by AB for CMRR FOLLOW US on SPOTIFY (Profil: CMRR) : (http•••) Download CMRR's recordings in High fidelity audio (QOBUZ) : (http•••) In seven parts, Verdi has created a work with an organic architecture and moving melodies. The work opens with the Introït (Requiem and Kyrie) of luminous contemplation. Then the Dies Irae bursts forth: four fortissimo chords in G minor. This sequence comprises ten parts, including the majestic Rex Tremendae, the moving Ingemisco of the tenor, the passionate Confutatis of the bass and the poignant Lacrymosa that brings the vocal quartet together. The elaborate counterpoint of the Offertory, the virtuosic and stormy fugue of the Sanctus, the cantilena of the Sanctus, the seraphic sweetness of the Lux Aeterna precede the grandiose conclusion of the Libera me. Fritz Reiner's performance is captivating and intense, while highlighting the theatrical character of the work. It is a reading that focuses on the 'dynamic nerve', on the 'organic tension' rather than on the implications of the liturgical text. The quartet is beautiful, dominated by Leontyne Price and Jussi Björling.
