Birthday celebrations at The Stoller Hall
Chetham's Symphony Orchestra in The Stoller Hall The Stoller Hall in Manchester is three tomorrow (5 May 2020) and the hall is celebrating, on-line of course, with a virtual gala concert hosted by the hall's artistic director Timothy Redmond. The celebration takes the form of a live-stream with performances from some of the best classical music performed in the north of England in recent years, all recorded at The Stoller Hall, including Manchester Collective, Manchester Camerata, Northern Chamber Orchestra and Chetham’s Symphony Orchestra star alongside global artists such as Soweto Gospel Choir.Highlights include Manchester Collective’s performance of Messiaen's Quartet for The End of Time, part of Manchester Camerata’s Mozart series, Iyad Sughayer in the second movement of Khachaturian's Piano Sonata in Eb Mayor [see my review of Sughayer's disc of Khachaturian] and celebrating the hall's links to Chetham's School of Music, Chetham’s Symphony Orchestra performs Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy […]

[…] an SCP Jazz commissioned work dedicated to the life and legacy of African American bandleader James Reese Europe' whose “Hellfighters” regiment brought black American music to France during the Great War. The AAN had the honor of partnering with the South African Consulate in Chicago to celebrate the centennial of human rights activist Nelson Mandela’s birth. This amazing multimedia discussion with music preceded the concert featuring the historic Soweto Gospel Choir in “Songs of the Free.” After the concert there was an impromptu gathering of AAN delegates, the Soweto Gospel musicians and the South African consul general and his staff.
