[…] In her latest work S.P.A.M van Griensven is inspired by Japanese myths in which a shapeshifting fox takes on human form. A large collection of lifelike little animalistic figures with human characteristics will be shown a special cabinet of curiosities. This exhibition wil be held in the Japanese Cultural Center Shofukan , where I give monthly shakuhachi lessons. Festival Cordes en Ballade – July 11 – Bourg-St-Andéol (France) Under the artistic direction of the Quatuor Debussy, “Dialogue au Pays du Soleil Levant” will be the theme of our concert featuring a string quartet, koto and shakuhachi. I’ll be back to the region where I grew up, studied music, gave my first flute lessons (when I was 17!). That brings back memories… Next to the shakuhachi, I’ll be presenting and playing some other flutes (including the Japanese transverse flute shinobue). C!RCA & Quartet: Shostakovich Stretches Out
photo) Circa with the Debussy Quartet, presented by the Celebrity Series at the Shubert Theater (Robert Torres photo) Courtesy of the Celebrity Series, I will never again hear the tender Andante from Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 5 without envisioning a svelte acrobat, suspended from a dark proscenium arch, twisting and turning between two black nylon sashes, rapt in the self-absorbed ecstasy of an unfolding chrysalis. Performer Billie Wilson-Coffey offered just one of many compelling, lingering images that Circa, Australia’s ‘new circus’ troupe, projected at Shubert Theater on Friday’s opening of “Opus”, a deep, rich collaboration with Quatuor Debussy in three quartets (and an early Adagio) of Shostakovich. Circa—founded in 2004, it’s neither your grandfather’s Ringling Brothers’ Circus nor your kids’ Cirque du Soleil—focuses on pairing fresh acrobatic repertoire with lighting, costume, and original music to convey aesthetics over entertainment, character over caricature. Extreme ballet here meets in a mind-meld with […]

The Circa Is Coming to Town Again
With nary a dog and pony act or whitefaced clown, Circa’s 19 circassians (acrobats) will illustrate three Schostakovich string quartets at Schubert Theater this weekend . . . if you can believe it. Some may remember Circa’s dark and edgy appearance in 2012. This time their unlikely partners are four blindfolded members of the Quatuor Debussy. The acrobats promise to defy gravity with dangerous hand to hand stunts, including a woman walking on the heads of her male counterparts, and dropping into a full split with her feet on the heads of two men. They will also do some aerial stunts with ropes and satin. You can see a short trailer of the performances here . The edgy show created by Circa’s artistic director Yaron Lifschitz begins with a solo performer suspended on a rope serenaded by musicians, then moves through rapidly alternating scenes of dislocated stillness and violent explosions into […]
