Spotlight Chamber Concerts, artistic director Anthony Friend, is back this Autumn for its fifth edition with five concerts in the beautifully restored St John's Waterloo, each concert offering an intense, immersive experience of live music, with dramatic lighting centred only on the performers, and the audience in the dark and in the round. Running from 3 November to 10 December 2023, the season features pianist Benjamin Grosvenor and violinist Hyeyoon Park, pianist Steven Osborne, clarinettist Anthony Friend and the Maxwell Quartet, pianist Emmanuel Despax, and the Solem Quartet.The series opens with Benjamin Grosvenor and his duo partner Hyeyoon Park in RVW's The Lark Ascending (in its original version for violin and piano), Grieg's Violin Sonata No 3 and Takemitsu’s Distance de fée. EnSEmble26 is a collective of musicians based in the Sydenham area (SE 26) devoted to bringing live music to local areas. The ensemble is presenting a concert a St. John's Waterloo on Monday 25 September 2023 when Eleanor Meynell and Tom Norris from the ensemble will be joined by violinist Roman Simovic and violist Milena Simovic, Andrew and Julia Joyce from the Puertas Quartet (Principal Cello and Viola of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra ) and cellist Stephanie Tress and violinist William Newell from the Solem Quartet. In fact, the eight players comprise four married couples, which should make the dynamics of the group rather intriguing (fly on the wall time at rehearsals).The concert is ending with Mendelssohn's Octet, which needs no introduction, and the first half will include Frank Bridge's Lament for two violas and Ravel's String Quartet.Full details from the EnSEmble26 website.

The Solem Quartet at Spotlight Chamber Concerts in December 2021 Clarinettist Anthony Friend started Spotlight Chamber Concerts in 2020 as a direct result of the pandemic. At a time when concerts indoors were not possible, there was an imaginative series of chamber music concerts in the bandstand in Wandsworth Park. Since then, they moved indoors to St John's Waterloo, again with the format of the concerts responding to circumstances but concentrating on the music. For their Spring 2022 season, Spotlight Chamber Concerts are at Cecil Sharp House from 8 to 24 March 2022. Each concert lasts something over an hour, beginning at 8pm. As before, the audience is seated in the dark and in the round with dramatic lighting centred only on the performers, enabling the audience to focus solely on the immersive experience of live music. The Brodsky Quartet and the Manchester Camerata both celebrate their 50th anniversaries this year and the two ensembles will be giving a celebratory concerts including a joint one with saxophonist Jess Gillam.
