Danish music: selection on dacapo
Thanks to the nice people chatting here I've started exploring Danish music through the out-of-print CDs of the dacapo label. This post presents a few works of six main composers, missing only the living Per Nørgård (1932). Chamber orchestra returns from the dead
press release: With support from three Danish funds, the Danish National Chamber Orchestra launches an extensive series of recordings and concerts, playing Beethoven’s nine symphonies, with its chief conductor, Adam Fischer. The project that continues through 2018, also marks the reality of the orchestra’s fight to become a privately funded orchestra. Which goes to show there is life after state broadcasting and public funding. About the musicians: 35 of the original musicians of the DNCO are the core of the current orchestra. When the orchestra was part of DR, it had 42 permanent positions. Five of these were vacant when the orchestra left DR in September 2014. Their work with DNCO is possible due to exceptional willingness from themselves and their current […]

Doomed Orchestra Has Actually Saved Itself With Crowdfunding
The Danish National Chamber Orchestra was disbanded at New Year’s, after “this 75-year-old ensemble’s state funding was cancelled at ludicrously short notice … Through a Kickstarter campaign to raise 3m Danish kroner (£300,000), the orchestra received more than a third of that money from supporters, and have now had pledges for the rest of the balance from the Danish business community.”

Private donations and public support mean that this innovative orchestra will not be disbanded despite the loss of its state fundingLet’s save an orchestra: the Danish National Chamber Orchestra, which was scandalously disbanded on 1 January when this 75-year-old ensemble’s state funding was cancelled at ludicrously short notice, has been mounting a typically imaginative campaign to bring about its potential resurrection. It’s not just eating chillies, playing tango, and performing in shopping centres: thanks to the group’s refusal to take their fate lying down, they have raised enough money from private donations to bring the orchestra back from the brink. Through a Kickstarter campaign to raise 3m Danish kroner (£300,000), the orchestra received more than a third of that money from supporters, and have now had pledges for the rest of the balance from the Danish business community. Confusingly, because Kickstarter won’t accept single donations of more than 50,000 DKK, […]
