Credit: Gail Hadani Times Union Joseph Dalton March 20, 2022 There is courage in Tania Leon’s music, particularly in the score to her Pulitzer Prize-winning piece “Stride,” which the Albany Symphony Orchestra will perform in Troy on Saturday and Sunday, March 26-27. Every one of Leon’s compositions has been an of bravery, given the challenges she’s faced as an Afro-Cuban woman building a career in the U.S. music scene after her immigration in 1967 at age 24. The stiff spine in “Stride” also reflects the circumstances of its creation. Honoring the centennial of the 19th Amendment that gave women the vote, the New York Philharmonic launched Project 19, consisting of commissions for 19 women composers.
