Helvi Leiviskӓ: Orchestral Works, Vol. 1 (CD Review)
by Ryan RossSinfonia brevis, Op. 30; Orchestral Suite No. 2, Op. 11; Symphony No. 2, Op. 27. Dalia Stasevska, conductor; Lahti Symphony Orchestra (Sinfonia Lahti). BIS-2701 I wish performers and critics would spend more time promoting music like Helvi Leiviskä’s. True, it comes off as fairly conservative and will not titillate too many elite tastes. If her style occupies a middle ground between Romanticism and Modernism (traditionally defined), it nonetheless favors the former. Somewhat unfairly, Finnish classical music after Sibelius often gets measured by his example – a ridiculously steep benchmark against which Leiviskä acquits herself very respectably. But to anyone for whom these things aren’t the kiss of death, much joyful discovery awaits. What we have here are gorgeous, sumptuously scored orchestral works that deserve exposure. Dalia Stasevska and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra make a good case for them with a recording that goes firmly into the “recommended” category. The most immediately appealing […]

Rautavaara and Martinů: Piano Concertos (CD Review)
by Ryan RossRautavaara: Piano Concerto No. 3 ‘Gift of Dreams’; Martinů: Piano Concerto No. 3. Olli Mustonen, piano; Lahti Symphony Orchestra; Dalia Stasevska, conductor. BIS-2532The unexpected coupling of these two compositions is already creating some buzz for this recording. What do they and their composers at all have in common anyway? According to the liner notes by Jean-Pascal Vachon, both men “adopted an attitude free from any musical puritanism, constantly finding new sources of inspiration which they explored without taboos.” Right. But these are also both very accessible compositions in a 20th-century musical landscape where accessibility still isn’t a particularly prestigious value, even in hindsight. It was one thing for Martinů to be composing neo-Romantic music (Vachon notes his Third Concerto’s links with Brahms) as late as 1948, but what of Rautavaara cranking out works that are at once so individual and yet so unabashedly easy on the ears, decades after having […]

Here's a huge change, though also a change that looked more and more possible over the last six months: Daniel Barenboim, suffering from deteriorating health, is resigning as music director of the Berlin State Opera.
