Arcangelo CorelliConcerti Grossi op. 6 Modo Antiquo Federico Maria Sardelli Tactus 1999 flac, cue, logs and scans Modo Antiquo present the first recorded performance with the addition of ripieno trumpets, oboes and flutes, a practice which modern research suggests was common in Rome in Corelli’s time, though nowhere indicated in the published editions of these concertos. Whether or not these particular concerti grossi would have been performed in this way we shall never know and I’m no more qualified to get involved in the debate than anyone who reads Federico Sardelli’s persuasive notes in the booklet. What I can say is that the results sound convincing, especially as the performances are sharply delineated and sympathetic and the additions are not overdone. Nothing in these performances is in bad taste or contrary to the spirit of the music. Try listening to No.8, the ‘Christmas’ concerto, especially the familiar pastoral finale.Perhaps […]

[…] numerous operas; here I have only seen "Il Giustino" at the Coliseo, about four decades ago. When Berlin recovered from Kiev the manuscript, several pieces were absent, including the Overture and several scenes; the version we heard, by Federico Sardelli, incorporates the Overture from "Tamerlano" and choirs from "Griselda". Data from Internet: Sardelli´s Orchestra Modo Antiquo numbers 16 first-rate musicians, especially a marvelous trumpet player. Of the good singers I preferred mezzo Vivica Genaux (known in BA) as Mitrena and Luigi De Donato as a bass-baritone Motezuma. Even in a concert version, it wasn´t a good idea to have rivals sung by the same soprano (unbelievable as both Fernando –Hernán- Cortés and Asprano, an Aztec General). […]

Modo Antiquo/Sardelli (Harmonia Mundi)Three of the seven early concertos and sonatas on this disc have never been recorded before, including a sonata in G major for violin, cello and basso continuo (RV 820) only recently authenticated and now thought to be the earliest known chamber work by Vivaldi. Its unusual scoring gives it a thick, brooding texture which contrasts starkly with other sprightly examples scored for lighter instruments. Modo Antiquo play with exquisite precision and rhythmic verve, drawing all soloists from their highly talented ranks. And special praise for Simone Vallerotonda, whose baroque guitar and theorbo playing keeps everything purring along nicely. Continue reading...
