This spectacular piece I played with the National Children’s Wind Orchestra of Great Britain in 2002. Written in 2000 it’s a bright festive piece that is great fun for every member of the band. A Masque was a form of medieval entertainment when masked revellers would gatecrash posh parties and inspire the diners to join them in dances. Hesketh captures the mood of this revelling with a series of cheerful tunes. The main theme is present throughout and is full of laughter and jollity. The melody is mainly given to the brass, specifically French horn, although watch out for the trumpet, oboe, clarinet and piccolo parts which add lots of colour to this layered work.
