But this is therefore a work with which I have lived for a while, and of which I have heard a number of fine performances since that CBSO Prom with Simon Rattle (and Maurizio Pollini), one next door at the Kammermusiksaal included (from members of this same orchestra as the Scharoun Ensemble and Pierre Boulez). Today’s Berlin Philharmonic and Kirill Petrenko have little to fear from even the most exalted comparisons, but it is better simply to consider their performance on its own terms. […] combination of horn, violin, and viola sounded uncannily like an organ, yet this was always a way of hearing Bach. So too, albeit at a greater distance, is much of Schoenberg. It was fitting, then, to end with his First Chamber Symphony, although this was the performance about which I had a few doubts. A little more than fifteen years ago, I heard Pierre Boulez conduct this same work in the same hall, with the Scharoun Ensemble of players drawn from the Berlin Philharmonic. That struck me as an ideal performance, but perhaps I was simply more used to the underlying assumptions and aesthetic. Benjamin, I think, took the opening, once past the short introduction, not only faster but at a speed at least to rival the earlier Boulez, of Domaine musical vintage. […] women and 11 men will attend this year’s edition from 13 nationalities – 4 of them Swiss – (Germany, Japan, Belarus, Luxembourg, United Kingdom, United States, Austria, Portugal, Spain, Poland, Slovenia and Switzerland). The 33 young musicians are invited to take part in an intensive two weeks of music-making, following the tradition that Pablo Casals created all those years ago at the foot of the Matterhorn. These exceptional students receive tuition and support from the Scharoun Ensemble Berlin with whom they form the Zermatt Festival Orchestra.This year, the Zermatt Festival Orchestra presents the following soloists : Fabio Biondi, Christian Gerhaher, Guillaume Jehl and Alexandre Bader conducted by Fabio Biondi, Stanley Dodds and Christian Poltéra.The master class at the Matterhorn Museum on 12 September, which will be open to the public, and the concerts given by the members of the academy are always highlights of the festival.
