Igor Levit (Photo: Felix Broede )The Southbank Centre has announced its Autumn/Winter programme for 2024/25 which includes a five-day Opening Weekend, residencies from violist Lawrence Power, organist James McVinnie and Manchester Collective, and visitors include Yuja Wang and Víkingur Ólafsson, the Borodin Quartet celebrating its 80th anniversary, Concerto Italiano, The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra with Daniel Barenboim, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra performing Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring and the BBC Concert Orchestra with Unclassified Live.The Opening Weekend, from 25 to 29 September 2024, features Joyce DiDonato in Berlioz with Edward Gardner and the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Philharmonia launching its Nordic Soundscapes series with Sibelius, Grieg and María Sigfúsdóttir conducted by Santtu-Matias Rouvali, violist Lawrence Power and composer Thomas Ades, the Multi-Storey Orchestra, cellist Matthew Barley, the Paraorchestra, and the Scottish Ensemble. Released today, the first of two specially-commissioned performance films from the Scottish Ensemble with Glasgow production company Forest of Black. The film features the Scottish Ensemble performing Anna Meredith's Tull. The film is on the Scottish Ensemble's YouTube channel, and can also be streamed.Tull was premiered by Scottish Ensemble in 2014. The three-minute piece is scored for 12 divided strings and presents a variation on the traditional Scots’ tune Tullochgorum. Meredith’s realisation is "fuzzy but energetic". Tullochgorum (also known as The Reel of Tullochgorum) is the title of a song, which carries the line 'For blithe and cheery we'll be a'. The words to the song were written by the Scottish poet, songwriter, minister and historian, the Rev. No ordinary concert: Scottish Ensemble reunites with MishMash productions for in Sync, a joyful, energetic event for all the family
Scottish Ensemble & Mish Mash Productions - in SyncFounded in 2015, MishMash Productions is a Nottingham-based company creating musical experiences designed to in introduce young audiences to classical music in welcoming ways. Scottish Ensemble first started working with MishMash in 2022, beginning with development sessions to design a show for younger audiences. The result was in Sync. No ordinary concert, audiences get to know the musicians when they introduce themselves, interact with audiences, perform from memory, move while they play and share insights into the music being performed, all on a vibrant stage set with colourful atmosphere, thus making in Sync a joyful, energetic event for all the family. Scottish Ensemble reunites with MishMash for performances of in Sync in Aberdeen Concert Hall (4 November 2023) and Glasgow's RSNO New Auditorium (9 November 2023), along with a tour to schools in Glasgow, Aberdeen and Dundee.
