Carl Vine: Five String Quartets - Goldner Quartet
[…] the Goldners were not invited to record the complete quartet. [At least the download has one more movement than the original CD release which only had the fourth and sixth movements. The addition of the third movement appears to be unknown to the compiler of the digital booklet.] For me the String Quartet No.3, with it's sublime slow section, is the most powerful of the five on this release. It was written for the British Smith Quartet and also exists in a version for string orchestra titled Smith's Alchemy, already posted here in a recording played by the Tasmanian Symphony conducted by Ola Rudner. String Quartet No.4 was commissioned in honour of the composer's 50th birthday and String Quartet No.5 was composed for the Goldners. As expected from the wonderful Australian Goldner Quartet, they give beautifully assured performances of all five quartets. Amazingly, the quartet has consisted of the same […]

Carl Vine: The Tempest & Oboe Concerto - Ola Rudner & Diana Doherty
[…] Diana Doherty, currently principal oboe with the Sydney Symphony. The other works in this collection are all written for chamber orchestra. The longest, the suite from The Tempest, was created for this recording and has a greatly reduced instrumentation from the original 90 minute ballet. Nevertheless it offers vivid orchestral scene painting using just a chamber-sized orchestra. Possibly the most dramatic work here, Smiths Alchemy, is developed from Vine's Third String Quartet (written for Britain's Smith Quartet - hence the title) into music for string orchestra. We will hear this music again in its original form later in this sequence of posts. The Tasmanian Symphony offer fine and dedicated performances of all of these works under their then chief conductor, the Swedish Ola Rudner, and there is excellent and detailed recorded sound.
