The late Jiří Bělohlávek conducts this 1926 Czech masterpiece full of “restless, sharp-edged, brilliantly scored music” (San Francisco Classical Voice). The cast also features Slovak tenor Miro Dvorsky as Albert Gregor, German bass-baritone Gerd Grochowski as Baron Jaroslav Prus and America bass-baritone Dale Travis as Dr. Kolenatý. (Karita Karita Karita. Bělohlávek was superb; the whole cast was excellent, and this was the perfect role for Mattila.)

We’ve all had them; we all crave them: those magical nights in an opera house when you know history is being made. We even remember the dates. On 07 May 2007 the air inside Theater an der Wien crackled with anticipation before the premiere of Leos Janácek’s Z mrtvého domu (From the House of the Dead) in a production by Patrice Chéreau conducted by Pierre Boulez. No one was disappointed: it was, indeed, history, which continued to mesmerize audiences throughout Europe and even the Met. This week’s performance comes from the Festival International d’Art Lyrique d’Aix-en-Provence a few weeks after the Wien world premiere with the same cast. Highlights among the massive ensemble cast include Olaf Bär, Stefan Margita, John Mark Ainsley, and Gerd Grochowski. Gerd Grochowski died the day after singing Wotan
Wiebaden Opera has published details of the death of the international bass-baritone , Gerd Grochowski. On Sunday January 15, Gerd sang Wotan in the first performance of a new production of Wagner’s Die Walküre. He received great public acclaim and several ovations. On Monday he rang the emergency doctor, complaining of chest pains. He received prompt treatment but died at 3:o9 pm. His last words on stage were: ‘Nur eines will ich noch, das Ende. (there’s only one thing I still want: the end.’ The company pays tribute t o his kindness and truthfulness, the sincerity of his honest struggle for life-affirming art.
