Verdi - Falstaff - Toscanini - RCA (1990 & 2000 remasterings)
[…] question that the sound offers greater fullness and warmth than its D predecessor. However, that sonic richness seems to have been obtained via the use of added resonance. As a result, the new mastering does not provide the almost clinical detail of the first CD issue. Another interesting tidbit: At the start of Act I, Dr. Caius accuses Falstaff “Hai battuto i miei servi!” (“You have beaten my servants!”). On this new set, Carelli sings some combination of vowels and consonants, but certainly not what librettist Arrigo Boito wrote. This gaffe would be of small consequence, but for the fact that in the previous CD issue (and, as far as I can recall, all prior LP releases), Carelli sings the line correctly. Obviously, RCA corrected the mistake by splicing in the line, either as recorded at the dress rehearsal, or at a subsequent patch-up session. I did not […]

Those scans don't have the minor errors that appeared in the libretto of the CD release.

[…] Mercury, Pan, Linfea (servant of Diana), Satirino and Silvano (Pan´s acolytes and lovers). The music flows irresistibly, full of character and melody. The best thing was the historicist ten-member ensemble led admirably by Manuel de Olaso. Both Rocío Arbizu (Diana) and Constanza Díaz Falú (Calisto) were fully in command, and the young voices of Felipe Carelli (Mercury) and Mauricio Meren (Silvano) are quite promising. Gabriel Carasso (Jupiter) sang well in his normal baritone range, but went over the top as "Diana". The others were on a lower level: Esteban Manzano, Lucas Villalba, Cintia Verna , Fernando Ursino and Stefania Cap. "La Calisto" was offered in the Sala Piazzolla, which has […]

[…] Othello as Desdemona´s murderer: Mariana Carnovali was firm and interesting as actress and singer. Sergio Spina avoided his usual exaggeration and was believable as the young captain Cassio. All the smaller parts were well taken except for the weak Rodrigo of Maximiliano Agatiello: Carlos Esquivel (the ambassador Ludovico), Mario De Salvo (Montano) and Felipe Carelli (Herald). There were two casts, I saw the first. Except for the slow tempi of Desdemona´s big scene and a too prolonged silence in Iago´s crucial Credo, I found Carlos Vieu an admirable conductor with strong command. The orchestra was reasonably expert save for some trumpet bits and the bad tuning of basses at […]
