Ensemble collaboration: Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music from Opera North and the Leeds Playhouse
[…] 2021. The production was directed by James Brining (artistic director of Leeds Playhouse) and conducted by James Holmes (Opera North's former head of music) with the orchestra of Opera North using Jonathan Tunick's original orchestrations, and members of the chorus of Opera North cast in around a dozen roles. The cast included Dame Josephine Barstow as Madame Armfeldt, Stephanie Corley as Desiree Armfeldt, Lucy Sherman as Fredrika Armfeldt, Quirijn de Lang as Fredrik Egerman, Corinne Cowling as Anne Egerman, Laurence Kilsby as Henrik Egerman, Amy J Payne as Petra, Christopher Nairne as Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm, Helen Evora as Countess Charlotte Malcolm and Ivan Sharpe as Frid. Bernstein's problem child: a lively & engaging Candide at West Green House
[…] should be fun, and this was great fun with the members of the ensemble all enjoying themselves terrifically, and their enjoyment was truly infectious. The set was simple, just a map of the world as a backdrop and a series of travel trunks which stacked inside one-another (the largest big enough to take Fflur Wyn with the lid closed!). These were used imaginatively, and the ensemble was present for much of the time (choreography Corinne Cowling, who was a member of the ensemble). This created a vivid ensemble feel to the performance. Though this version does sag somewhat in the second half, director Richard Studer and conductor Jonathan Lyness kept things moving and the result was an engaging and enjoyable show.Ben McAteer was simply brilliant in the double role of Dr Pangloss and Voltaire. He has the lion's share of the spoken dialogue, acting as explainer and narrator for much […]

Jolly good show! - Charles Court Opera's The Mikado
[…] of The Mikado at the King’s Head Theatre (seen 27 March 2018) in John Savournin’s modest but handsome staging with sets and costumes by Rachel Szmukler, under musical director David Eaton. The experienced cast of fruity voiced Titipudlians are lead by Philip Lee as Lord High Executioner. A clutch of Matthews: Palmer, Kellett and Siveter appear as The Mikado, Pooh-Bah and Katisha. Jack Roberts goes a-minstrelling and Alys Roberts, Jessica Temple and Corinne Cowling are the irrepressible wards of Ko-Ko and just so we don’t feel short changed members of the cast are called upon to do some peripatetic choral duties. Matthew Palmer (Pish-Tush) Matthew Kellett (Pooh-Bah) Philip Lee (Ko-Ko) Photo Bill Knight Under David Eaton’s direction music and text are both crisp and precise with moments of real beauty. The ensembles stood out in particular and I wondered whether huddled away in the corner behind his […]

Review of Clonter Opera's The Marriage of Figaro
[…] gift as both Basilio and Curzio, while Angharad Lyddon as Cherubino sings delightfully and has mastered the art (and walk) of being a girl playing a boy who at times is pretending to be a girl. Elizabeth Skinner (the Countess) brings a lovely mature sound to her role; Eugene Dillon-Hooper is a believable Dr Bartolo, with Jade Moffat (Guidhall) vocally strong as Marcellina. There were valuable contributions, too, from Edward Robinson as Antonio and Corinne Cowling as Barbarina. Henry Neill as Figaro and Margo Arsane as Susanna in Clonter Opera's The Marriage of Figaro.
