I have referred in recent articles to two installments of the Festival Nueva Ópera Buenos Aires, a project of the CETC (Centro de Experimentación del Teatro Colón). Now I will complete it with"Don Juan", chamber opera by Santiago Villalba on Leopoldo Marechal´s literary text, presented at the CETC; and "Perfect Lives" (in English in the original), labeled as a TV opera (it isn´t) with music and libretto by Robert Ashley; this was seen at the Colón´s Salón Dorado. First, a reminder. "Don Juan" has already been an opera by Juan Carlos Zorzi, with symphony orchestra, premièred at the big hall on 1998. It was a good shot at musicalizing Marechal´s idea of an aging Don Juan coming back to his hometown near the river […]

[…] which was held during an important exhibition of Mexican art at the museum in May 1940, a 32 pages brochure was issued. One of the illustrations in this booklet gave Warhol the inspiration for the cover drawing. (Tak for the picture, Niklas) The background color of the 10 inch record with the Warhol drawing most commonly is green, but also a blue variety exists. .In his catalogue raisonné of Warhol record covers, Paul Maréchal also mentions a yellow version, but this was based on observations on the internet, he did not own a copy. These covers can look quite different on picture. My experience with purchasing a more or less ‘yellow’ copy at eBay, is that when the records arrived, they turned out to be exactly the same light green as I already had. I agree with friend and fellow collector Niklas Lindberg that most likely only the […]

This beautiful EP on Camden records is the pride of my collection, because in fact I myself (re)discovered this Warhol cover. In 2006 I visited a record fair in Ghent, Belgium. I was browsing a box of old American jazz and classical EP’s, hoping to score a Latin Rhythms or Progressive Piano (which at that time I still believed to exist). I was really astonished when I saw this Waltzes by Johann Strauss Jr. record. I also collect magazines and books with Warhol illustrations, so I was very familiar with his drawing style in the Fifties. I sent a picture to Paul Maréchal, who I knew was working on the catalogue raisonné of record covers, and to chief archivist Matt Wrbican of The Warhol Museum. Neither of them had ever seen this cover before. Wrbican confirmed it to be a Warhol drawing, Maréchal included the record in his catalogue. I found […]
