Frothy fun: Johann Strauss' unaccountably neglected operetta Blindekuh
Johann Strauss II: Blindekuh; Robert Davison, Kirsten C Kunkle, Martina Bortolotti, Roman Picher, James Bowers, Andrea Chudak, Daniel Schliewa, Emily K Byrene, Julian Rohde, Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, Dario Salvi; NaxosWritten a few years after Die Fledermaus and unaccountably neglected, Strauss' operetta proves a work of great charm in this revival from SofiaJohann Strauss the younger completed some 15 operettas over a span of over 25 years (1871 to 1897). All but one, Ein Nacht in Venedig were premiered in Vienna. Yet only one has made a regular place in the repertoire, Die Fledermaus (premiered in 1874), whilst two others make it as also-rans, Ein Nacht in Venedig (1883) and Die Zigeunerbaron (1885), both more common in German speaking areas than elsewhere. The commonly accepted reason for this is the poor quality of Strauss' librettos. Certainly most of the plots of his operettas are based on ideas of Boulevard comedies with […]

A little video to celebrate the completion of Dario Salvi and my new operetta, Ademdai - or The Necessary and the Superfluous
Dario Salvi and I have finished the first draft of our new operetta, Ademdai - or the Necessary and the Superfluous, and to celebrate Dario has produced this fun little video [on YouTube], pairing music from the beginning of the opera (in a computer synthesisation) with a charming old cartoon. Our story is based on one from The Thousand and One Nights, based on a story by the Austrian dramatist Ignaz Castelli (1781-1862). Our operetta is in two acts with five solo roles (Scheherazade - spoken, Ademdai - tenor, Caliph - baritone, Jaffar - bass-baritone, Naima - soprano), chorus and orchestra and follows the adventures of our hero Ademdai, a poor young man from Baghdad who wishes nothing more than what is essential for his simple life! The score includes pantomime, melodrama, narration and dance episodes alongside songs and ensembles, with plenty of good tunes. Find out more on my […]

Introducing Ademdai
In December last year, I found myself in contact with the conductor, researcher and arranger Dario Salvi in connection with his recording of Meyerbeer's first opera, which was issued on Naxos Music Library [see my review]. We got chatting by email and the idea of a collaboration came up. Dario conducts a lot of 19th century ballet music and operetta [see his discography], and he had the idea of us collaborating on a contemporary operetta. The result is Ademdai or The necessary and the superfluous with a plot is based on a tale from One Thousand and One Nights. The music is gradually working its way through our studies, in London and in Glasgow, but it has been a lovely exercise. For me it felt like casting back to my earliest music writing career, when I wrote musicals and songs for cabaret performers. Again, we were writing songs with a clear beginning, middle […]

Auber - overtures, entractes & ballet music from Zanetta, Zerline; Janacek Philharmonic Orchestra, Dario Salvi; Naxos Reviewed by Robert Hugill on 15 March 2022 Star rating: 4.0 (★★★★) Naxos continuing series devoted to Auber's music reveals a composer of surprising style, elegance and imaginationIn 2012 we caught Auber's La muette de Portici at the Opera Comique in Paris, a rare outing for the opera with Patrick Davin conducting a cast including Michael Spyres. And if you think it strange that the Opera Comique should be performing Grand Opera written for the Paris Opera, it is worth bearing in mind that the pre-Palais Garnier opera occupied a building on the site of the present Opera Comique, so dimensions are probably very suitable. There has been a slow revival of French Grand Opera in the last 20 years, operas by Meyerbeer are becoming more frequent, it is possible to catch performances […]
