Somewhere for the weekend: Suoni dal Golfo
Conductor Gianluca Marcianò's festival Suoni dal Golfo returns to Lerici in Ligura, Italy from 16 to 31 August 2018. Marcianò and co-artistic director Maxim Novikov are presenting a programme of music and poetry inspired by the sea and by the poets who were drawn to this emerald coastline. Liszt's recently re-discovered Italianate opera Sardanapolo will receive its Italian premiere. Liszt worked on the opera intermittently until 1852 when he abandoned it. The libretto is based on Lord Byron's tragedy of 1821, and Liszt completed a substantial part of Act One, but having conducted Wagner's Lohengrin and Tannhauser he stopped work on it. Marcianò will conduct a cast including Anush Hovhannisyan, Sam Sakker and Vazgen Ghazaryan. The orchestra will be Orchestra Excellence, Marcianò and Novikov's new initiative for emerging musicians.Performing at the festival for the first time is the Polyphony Quartet, which has evolved out of Polyphony Foundation, established by Nabeel Abboud-Ashkar. Senior Putin aide is directing an opera
Sergei Novikov is a Kremlin aide with close access to the president. He is the sole assistant to former prime minister Sergei Kiriyenko who has been charged with securing Putin’s next election victory in 2018. But Sergei Novikov has a life. He’s an opera buff, especially Russian opera. According to this report from a not-infallible source, he is putting on four concert performances in Moscow of Dargomyzhky’s Rusalka. Rusalka is the story of a mermaid who cannot conceive, but ultimately does. Novikov sees it as a political message in support of his anti-abortion foundation. As the child in the opera he has cast a girl with Down’s Syndrome.

[…] his other music is bad, but this one is probably his most well-known. Even though the title of the piece implies it’s a symphony, in structure it’s a lot more similar to a concerto, if you ask me. A solo piano plays a theme and trades it off with the orchestra. After his death, Franck’s students championed this work and it eventually became a part of standard repertoire. Here’s an excellent performance by Yuri Novikov, a professor of piano at Dnepropetrovsk Conservatory named after Glinka in southeastern Ukraine. I think this recording is great, which is one reason why I decided to share this piece on my blog a second time. Or click here to watch on YouTube.
