Plenty of food for thought & some terrific singing: Oliver Mears' staging of Handel's Jephtha at the Royal Opera with a towering performance from Allan Clayton in the title role
Handel: Jephtha - Jennifer France - Royal Opera House (Photo: Marc Brenner)Handel: Jephtha; Allan Clayton, Alice Coote, Jennifer France, Cameron Shahbazi, Brindley Sherratt, director: Oliver Mears, conductor: Laurence Cummings; Royal Opera HouseReviewed 10 November 2023An incandescent performance by Allan Clayton in the title role with superb support the other soloists anchors the imaginative if flawed dramatic recreation of Handel's final oratorioIn adapting the story of Jephtha from the Bible for a dramatic work for Handel, the librettist Thomas Morell had to use quite a bit of imagination, to create a three hour drama out of the relatively curt Biblical references. A fine classicist, Morrell introduced elements from Greek drama, creating a work that it is tempting to see as naturally having a place on the stage. Arnold, Chausson, Elgar, Gurney, Hurd, Joncières & Simpson: Vocal & Orchestral Works (Roderick Williams, Felicity & Ben Palmer, Richard Hickox et al)
[…] Farach-Cohen, not unnaturally, plumped for Janet Baker's recording with John Barbirolli as his top choice. But he also included this recording by Felicity Palmer with Richard Hickox in his top four as The Luxurious Choice and also had good words for the Canadian Marie-Nicole Lemieux with Paul Daniel and this rare recording by a male voice by Roderick Williams with Martin Yates. The latter is one of my favourites along with the Baker and Alice Coote with Mark Elder.Download from Mega.

Prom 64: An evening of compelling drama and wonderful music making, Dinis Sousa conducts Berlioz' Les Troyens at the BBC Proms
Berlioz: Les Troyens, Act 2 - Alice Coote, Monteverdi Choir, Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, Dinis Sousa - BBC Proms (Photo: BBC/Andy Paradise)Berlioz: Les Troyens; Alice Coote, Michael Spyres, Paula Murrihy, Lionel Lhote, Adèle Charvet, Alex Rosen, Ashley Riches, Beth Taylor, Monteverdi Choir, Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique, Dinis Sousa; BBC Proms at the Royal Albert HallFrom Alice Coote's mesmerising entry as Cassandre to Paula Murrihy's moving final notes as Didon, this was an evening of compelling drama and wonderful music making, all brilliantly presided over by Dinis SousaThis was a much anticipated performance that threatened to be overwhelmed by the non-musical events surrounding it. But in the event, Berlioz proved once again that he is impossible to upstage, and from the opening notes of the opera, it was clear that this was to be a thrilling and mesmerising event. There were, in fact, two major changes to the performers; on Sunday 3 September […]
