Aimard/RSB/Popelka - Schoenberg and Mahler, 9 March 2024
PhilharmonieSchoenberg: Piano Concerto, op.42 Mahler: Symphony no.1 Pierre-Laurent Aimard (piano)Berlin Radio Symphony OrchestraPetr Popelka (conductor)Images: Peter MeiselThe world’s near-silence for Schoenberg’s anniversary year continues to deafen. Perhaps everywhere is waiting for September, when his birthday falls, and all will be revealed in a flurry of ‘new season’ announcements. And perhaps eternal Friede will descend upon the Erde this Christmas. In the meantime, Berlin, mostly at the Philharmonie, where there is an exhibition from the Arnold Schönberg Center in the foyer, continues to do better than most. Pierre-Laurent Aimard, who is certainly doing his bit, joined the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (RSB) and Petr Popelka for an outstanding performance of the Piano Concerto, probably the best I have heard live—and a match for the best on record. Franz Schubert composed the song “Du bist die Ruh”, and it is a well-known masterpiece that conveys in music a feeling of peace. I will concentrate on the poet’s words here, and below you can hear the singing by Barbara Bonney. Du bist die Ruh, (You are my rest,) Der Friede mild, (My calm and peace,) Die Sehnsucht du (My longing, you) Und was sie stillt. (That makes it cease.) Ich weihe dir (To you I give) Voll Lust und Schmerz (Full joy and pain) Zur Wohnung hier (As here to live) Mein Aug und Herz (My eye and heart)

A stark encounter with mortality, weariness, euphoria, and ‘weiter, stille Friede (wide, still peace); the virus provided me with the most curious sort of gift of experience which has forever stamped and deepened my understanding of this work.” Hearing the cycle in this arrangement is a remarkable experience, especially when my previous exposure to the work has been through the huge sound of the late Jessye Norman accompanied by Kurt Masur with Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. That is a recording I treasure for its sheer sumptuousness, […]

Sylvia Schwartz is one of the most versatile and exciting lyric sopranos of her generation. A true musician’s musician, she combines pure beauty of tone with exquisite musicality, wit, and authenticity, as well as a passion for the acting side of the profession. Here is the German text, and the English translation of Schubert’s song “Du bist die Ruh”. (By Friedrich Rückert) Du bist die Ruh, Der Friede mild, Die Sehnsucht du Und was sie stillt. Ich weihe dir Voll Lust und Schmerz Zur Wohnung hier Mein Aug und Herz. Kehr ein bei mir, Und schließe du Still hinter dir
