Like no other: Brixton Chamber Orchestra's Christmas party moved from classical and carols to rap, disco and a Shane MacGowan tribute
[…] there were three rappers bouncing off each other including one of the orchestra's viola players.A packed audience at UpstairsThings began in a more sedate style, with a set that included a Christmas medley moving from carol arrangements to Elton John's Step into Christmas with a terrific vocalist, Georgia who sang lots of numbers with the orchestra. Then they brought real pit orchestra energy to the overture to Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus, and we also had Nino Rota's title theme from The Godfather. Two carols featured audience participation, and they did sing lustily, cribbing words from their phones, whilst a mash-up of In dulce jubilo and Sussex Carol included a fine recorder solo. The second set began with an imaginative overture, SW2 written by local composer Ben Burrell that moved from slow introduction to dance-music up-tempo. Walker's concerto was preceded by a jazz-inflected on by Nathaniel Shilkret which was written for band leader Tommy Dorsey in 1942. Following on from Walker's concert came that by Nino Rota (1966), those by Xenakis (1991), Berio (1999), and Mark-Anthony Turnage (1999-2000) all dedicated to Christian Lindberg, James MacMillan (2001), and more recently Dani Howard (commissioned for Moore in 2021).The last time the trombone was featured at the BBC Proms was in 2003 with the Symphony No. 9 for trombone and orchestra by Finnish composer Kalevi Aho, again for trombonist Christian Lindberg and memorably featuring trombone, sackbut (early trombone) and free jazz solos. In the Autumn, Moore will […]
