Late romantic at Wigmore Hall: Simon Callaghan in Cyril Scott's sonata
[…] Sonata No. 1 at Wigmore Hall on 3 February 2024 alongside a wide-ranging programme of music from Scott's era with works by Percy Grainger, Claude Debussy and Igor Stravinsky. In fact, all three of these composers connected to Scott in some way.Scott was a man of connections. He studied in Frankfurt (including piano with one of Clara Schumann's pupils), where he met Percy Grainger and they formed part of the Frankfurt Gang with Balfour Gardiner, Norman O'Neill, Roger Quilter and Frederick Kelly, all of whom studied composition there with Iwan Knorr. Scott knew Stravinsky and visited him in Switzerland where Stravinsky played Scott parts of The Firebird, then a work in progress. It is speculated that Scott's fondness for constantly changing time signatures (something found in the piano sonata) influenced Stravinsky. Scott also knew Debussy, and the latter's support helped Scott with his publishers and Scott was often referred to as […]

Iverson: Conundrum; Victory Is Assured; Technically Acceptable; Who Are You, Really?; The Chicago Style; It’s Fine to Decline; The Way Things Are; Charles Fox / Norman Gimbel: Killing Me Softly With His Song; Thelonious Monk / Charles Cootie Williams: ‘round Midnight; Iverson: The Feeling Is Mutual; Piano Sonata – I. Allegro Moderato; II. Andante; III. Rondo. Ethan Iverson, piano (all selections); Thomas Morgan, double bass; Kush Abadey, drums; Vinnie Sperrazza, drums; Simón Willson, double bass; Rob Schwimmer, theremin. I am reviewing these two albums together because although they are on the surface quite different, one being a solo piano album of music by the French composer Debussy, the other being a jazz album, there are some significant overlaps between the two releases. First of all, the Wisconsin-born Iverson and Japan-born Sasaki are friends, both currently residing in New York. In a recent posting on Iverson’s Transitional Technology (“TT”) […]

Schein and many other, 2024
[…] Duparc (b. 1/21/1848), best known for his art songs. None of these composers were what is usually called “great” but all were talented and some of their works are very interesting. Listen, for example, to Alexander Tcherepnin’s 10 Bagatelles, op. 5 in a version for piano and orchestra (here). Margrit Weber is at the piano, Ferenc Fricsay conducts the Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. Or, in a very different way, here’s Duparc’s fine song, L'invitation au Voyage. Jessye Norman is accompanied by Dalton Baldwin. One composer, also born this week, interests us more than all the above, even though his name is almost forgotten- Johann Hermann Schein. Schein, a good friend of the better-known Heinrich Schütz, was one of the most important German composers of the pre-Bach era. He was born on January 20th of 1586 (99 years before Bach) in Grünhain, a small town in Saxony. As a boy, he moved to […]
