Barbican Hall Strauss: Metamorphosen Poulenc: La Voix humaine Barbara Hannigan, Denis Guégin, Clemens Malinowski (direction, video) Julien Bourdin (sound engineer) London Symphony OrchestraBarbara Hannigan (soprano, conductor) 24 February 2022 was a black day for Europe, for humanity. The prospect of a concert opening with Strauss’s Metamorphosen seemed potentially a little much, directing us all too readily to where war once more threatened to take us. Perhaps it was as well that the LSO, unobtrusively conducted by Barbara Hannigan—she only began to direct at the first violin entry—offered a performance more Apollonian than Dionysian, Goethe more than requiem. In an extended companion piece to Capriccioand its opening sextet, to the Oboe Concerto too, an aristocratic collection of string soloists came together as if a collection of Masters in Munich’s Alte Pinakothek. In principle, I may have missed something darker, something engaging with Beethovenian ghosts of heroism, with destruction and […]

Stephen Weigel on Microtonal music of Blackwood
[…] on the keyboard instead of the usual 12 - and that logic applies to each equal tuning used. The project was also completed within an extremely short 13-day time period. The tactful composition, golden analog charm, and history have made this piece into a microtonal classic. Bach Day #8: Listening to Math

I did NOT spend a lot of time on it, but imagine an instrument in such bad shape that the strings are constantly loosening. Wait, you don't have to imagine! I'll admit that I had a vague sense of déjà vu that I'd thought or heard of this concept before. I finally did a search and remembered that the remarkable Stephen Malinowski had done much the same thing, though using synth strings, with his Musical Animation Machine. That version is arguably more successful at disguising the pitch drop, though I like the clattering harpsichord - and everyone's already used to harpsichords being out of tune!Maybe you'll need something to cleanse the ear after that, so here's one last possibility. Just let the music rise until it disappears. It turns out that using the basic synth built into […]

One of my preferred Fugues from the WTC Book I – C# Minor Fugue played (and animated) by Smalin
This wondrous 5 voice fugue is one of my favorites from the Well Tempered Clavier. It features a subject and two counter subjects, as well as many intermediary patterns in between. It is animated masterfully by Stephen Malinowski The way I like to listen to these ultra-dense musical pieces is: Understand that the nature of …
