21st Birthday: Oxford Lieder Festival comes of age with a celebration of Friendship in Song

But it is with the themed events that the festival really creates something that is distinctly Oxford Lieder Festival. RVW's 150th birthday is celebrated with a series of lunchtime recitals of music by RVW and his contemporaries by performers including Kathryn Rudge, William Thomas, and Ailish Tynan, plus Alessandro Fisher, William Vann and the Navarra Quartet in On Wenlock Edge, and there will also be a new song cycle by Ian Venables commissioned by the Ralph Vaughan Williams Society. Pianist Dylan Perez at the recording sessions for the complete Samuel Barber songs on Resonus ClassicsIn May 2022, pianist Dylan Perez released Samuel Barber: the Complete Songs on Resonus Classics, a comprehensive survey of all of Barber's songs, both those published in his lifetime and those published posthumously, performed by sopranos Mary Bevan, Samantha Clarke, Louise Kemény, and Soraya Mafi, mezzo soprano Fleur Barron, contralto Jess Dandy, tenor Nicky Spence, baritones Julien Van Mellaerts, and Dominic Sedgwick, bass William Thomas, and the Navarra String Quartet. Bevan/Spence/Perez/Navarra String Quartet et al(Resonus)Every song Barber is known to have written is brought to life by 10 UK singers, including Nicky Spence and Mary Bevan Writing songs brought out the best in Samuel Barber. He had an ear for good texts and responded to them concisely and precisely, an impression reinforced by this double CD, which brings together all the songs he is known to have written. These include 19 that haven’t been recorded before, many dating from Barber’s earliest days as a composer – but that is no drawback when you consider that he was still a student when he made his masterly setting of Matthew Arnold’s poem Dover Beach. It’s the baritone Julian Van Mellaerts who sings Dover Beach here, with the Navarra Quartet, in a performance that has considerable immediacy if not the vocal velvet that, say, Thomas Hampson has brought to it on disc.
