Reviving unjustly neglected women composers for International Women's Day

Kashperova married one of her piano students, a twice-arrested and exiled Bolshevik revolutionary and the couple was forced to flee to the Caucasus and then to Moscow, where she continued to compose in secret. Her role as a composer is almost completely unknown today and the concert will be reviving her SymphonyJohanna Müller-Hermann (1868–1941) was an Austrian composer and pedagogue. She studied composition under Alexander Zemlinsky and Josef Foerster, and took over as a theory and composition tutor at the New Vienna Conservatory in 1918. Despite teaching there for more than 20 years, she is relatively unknown today and there are only a handful of recordings of her work. Stratford Festival Gets Largest Donation In Its History: $10 Million
The gift by board chair Dan Bernstein and his wife, Claire Foerster, will go toward the construction of a new $60 million performance space to replace the Ontario festival's Tom Patterson Theatre Center, built in 1971.

If – looking back to last week – Vítězslav Novák isn’t exactly a household name, his two contemporaries, Otakar Ostrčil and Josef Bohuslav Foester, are both most definitely in the same boat as him. All three were part of a generation overshadowed by Janáček and, to a lesser extent, Suk. And yet the Czech Music Information Centre describes (for instance) Ostrčil’s orchestral variations Calvary as “one of the greatest works of Czech music of the 20th century”.
