There have been a couple of interesting examples recently of conductors filling in the blanks of their respective symphony cycles. Antoni Wit recorded all but one of Krzysztof Penderecki‘s eight symphonies with the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, issued on a series of five discs by Naxos in the noughties.… The post appeared first on 5:4. 5:4 is on Patreon! Recent Releases No. 56 (CD Reviews)
by Karl NehringZygmunt Noskowski: Symphony No. 1 in A major; Symphony No. 2 in C minor, “Elegiac.” Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz; Antoni Wit, conductor. Capriccio C5509.Once again we have the exquisite pleasure of discovering worthwhile music by a composer whose name had been completely unknown to us (and probably many other music lovers) until now. It turns out that the relatively unknown Polish composer Zygmunt Noskowski (1846-1909) was a teacher of Szymanowski and student of Moniuszko, and for much of the 19th century was the primary exponent of contemporary symphonic music in Poland. In fact, Noskowski is considered to be one of the most significant Polish composers of the nineteenth century, one who produced successful output in nearly all musical genres: ballet, opera, sacred works, symphonies, symphonic poems, and smaller works (including works for children), especially for piano. Brahms composed the Haydn Variations during a summer retreat in 1873. The theme for the variations came into Brahms’ hands via his fascination with music manuscripts. In 1870, C.F. Here is the music, in the orchestral version:

Anglais - Pikovaya Dama at the Liceu: The Return of a Historic Production
In January 1992 Liceu presented a new production for Pikovaya Dama, a relatively infrequent opera in the Barcelona stage despite being one of the best Tchaikovsky operas. At that time, it was unanimously considered to be one of the most luxurious productions the theatre had ever done. In 2003 and 2010 it made the stage again and now, thirty years after its premiere, it has once more come back to Liceu – a rare event for an operatic production. Pikovaya Dama operates in two registers, in two levels. On one hand, as requested by the Mariinsky theatre in Saint Petersburg where the opera was due to be premiered, the piece takes the extreme shape of a French grand opéra, with an abundance of characters, more or less historical scenes (it even includes Catherine the Great, thankfully in a silent character), great choral scenes and ballet. Modest Tchaikovsky, the composer’s […]
