[…] principal cello shortly after. He went on to pursue a career as a soloist, making his recital debut in 1971 and later performing with many of the world’s major orchestras. He performed and recorded regularly in a trio with pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy and violinist Itzhak Perlmann. Together, they won Grammy Awards in 1981 and 1987 for their recordings of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio and Beethoven’s Piano Trios respectively. Handel's fines arias for base voice - Christopher Purves, Jonathan Cohen and Arcangelo
[…] be a striking aria. So on this disc we encounter the unknown bass soloist, with a range from bottom C sharp to top A, for whom Handel wrote the cantata Nell'africane selve in Naples in 1708, and the bass Carlo Maria Broschi who featured in Handel's opera seasons in the 1720s and who specialised in tyrants so Handel wrote him such roles in Siroe and Tolomeo (1728). In Handel's later oratorio period his bass soloists was often Henry Theodore Reinhold for whom Handel wrote roles in Belshazzar and Joshua (Reinhold also achieved success in the title role of Lampe's comedy The Dragon of Wantley).Christopher Purves brings a strong dramatic sense to the music and a willingness to […]

Finely balanced casting: La Nuova Musica in Handel's Orlando
[…] was not anxiety, in her Act Two aria 'Verdi piante' Angelica bids farewell to the green plants of the wood where she has been living, a hauntingly beautiful moment when time stood still. Angelica's love, Medoro (Christopher Lowrey) spends most of the opera in love, yet Lowrey did this in such a beautifully mellifluous fashion, creating a shapely sense of line. The magician Zoroastro oversees all the action; Handel expanded the role for the great bass Montagnana including adding a wonderful opening accompagnato. William Berger took some time to warm up, and this opening seemed somewhat understated, it was only when it came to the da capo repeats of his arias that Berger's performance came alive, perhaps he relished the freedom this gave him.David Bates directed a finely crafted performance from La Nuova Musica with many individual players contributing fine solo moments in addition to the wonderfully engaged sense of communal […]
