I was alas in the end unable to go, but as a consolation prize heard this intelligently programmed concert of French Baroque music from soprano Regina Koncz and members of the Staatskapelle Berlin in their Preussens Hofmusik incarnation, directed from the harpsichord by Staatskapelle violist Matthias Wilke. Jacques-Christophe Naudot was represented by a flute concerto in G major, a fine introduction to the concert and performance as a whole both in instrumentation and in uniting […]

Deus ex machina
[…] organs. His workshops are situated in an old priory destroyed by different wars, abandoned and restored by the craftsman since 1978.The monastic community at Le Barroux has released a highly-recommended double CD of the Aubertin organ played by guests Nigel de Gaunt-Allcoat, Simone Pedroni, Maurits Bunt, and Iain Simcock who advised on the construction of the new organ . The CD's repertoire avoids the 'organ play any music' by with an eclectic programme of Jacques Boyyin, François Couperin, Jean-Adam Guilain, Pierre Cochereau, Michael Praetorius, Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Nicolaus Bruhns, and J.S. Bach. (Quiz time: which is the only 20th century composer in that list?)As well as guesting on that double CD the young Dutch Maurits Bunt organist has also released a solo album of similarly eclectic repertoire. Recorded on the organ of Cathédrale Notre-Dame de l'Assomption de Rodez which originally dates from 1627 and is ideally suited to for French baroque works, […]

Anna Lapwood: Luna (CD Review)

In 2021, she released an organ recording for the Signum Classics label titled Images; you can find our review here. Now it is 2023, and she has a new recording out for a new label, Sony Classical, titled Luna. While Luna featured a program consisting of established classical compositions, highlighted by a couple of larger-scale works, Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin arranged for organ by Erwin Wiersinga and Britten’s Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes in an arrangement by Lapwood herself, the program for Luna is more varied. There are some traditional “classical” pieces for piano arranged for organ, some tunes from movies soundtracks, and among other things, even a couple of compositions not for organ, but for choir. Of the inspiration for this album, Lapwood writes, “one of the highlights of my year is the time I spend teaching […]
