San Francisco Opera Resumes Streaming
War Memorial Opera House Photo by Lisa Hirsch Starting in roughly ten days, San Francisco Opera will resume its weekly streams of operas staged in the last few years. Here's what's coming. October 10-11, 2020. Tosca, from 2014, in the Thierry Bosquet production that was in use from 1997 until the first bring-up of the new production. Cast: Lianna Haroutounian (house and role debut), Tosca; Brian Jagde, Cavaradossi; Mark Delavan, Scarpia; Dale Travis, Sacristan; Joel Sorensen, Spoletta; Efrain Solis, Sciarrone; Scott Connor, Angelotti. Riccardo Frizza, conductor; Jose Maria Condemi, director. October 17-18, 2020. Attila, from 2012. Ferrucio Fulanetto, Attila; Lucrecia Garcia, Odabella (I would swear I saw Oksana Dyka in this?); Quinn Kelsey, Ezio; Diego Torre, Foresto; Samuel Ramey, Pope Leo. New Production, Same as the Old Production: Tosca at San Francisco Opera
[…] his sword, and they look a lot like other productions you've seen. Act II. Scott Hendricks (Scarpia), Joel Sorensen (Spoletta), Carmen Giannattasion (Tosca). Photo: Cory Weaver/San Francisco Opera Brian Jagde as Cavaradossi in Puccini's "Tosca." Photo: Cory Weaver/San Francisco Opera Lianna Haroutounian, Act III, 2014 Photo: Cory Weaver/San Francisco Opera (There's no press photo of the new production showing the whole Act III set, but, honestly, it's not different enough from Bosquet's production to matter. The angel is center stage; its pedestal has a different shape; the silhouettes of Roman buildings are spread out around the background.)The problem with Tosca is that the libretto is so very specific about the time and place of the opera that unless you go full Regie -- always a risk with a popular and well-known work -- every production will look very much alike. (If you're wondering about the risk, well, after […]

Sweetness and light
I love the prelude to Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier, especially the first soaring phrases. British guest conductor Edward Gardner gave a balanced, stirring, detailed, and exciting version of the score, played with gusto and verve by the Lyric Opera Orchestra. On Tuesday evening there were a disappointing number of empty seats in the Civic Opera House, but the audience seemed to much enjoy the performance in the beautiful, traditional sets and costumes (by Thierry Bosquet) that originated with the San Francisco Opera and were first seen at Lyric in the 2005-06 season. Director Martina Weber made the traditional production work well for the most part, and it was a pleasure to see Strauss’ romantic comedy in the sumptuous costumes of 1740s Vienna. And, in an unusual move, Lyric invited the audience to watch the scene change between Act One and Act Two, somewhat “Met in HD”-ish. Most of the crowd stayed […]

Remember the site that was auctioning off various props before the sale and demolition of San Francisco Opera's warehouse earlier this year? At the moment - except that the auctions seem to have ended - they have a number of SFO productions on the block, for prices running up to $40,000. Only one of the old productions has sold, the lovely Michael Yeargan La Boheme last seen with Beczala and Gheorghiu a few years ago. Also up for sale (or maybe not): Yeargan's famous Di Chirico-inspired RigolettoPonelle Cav & Pag from 1975Die Fledermaus from 1990Ponelle Gianni Schicchi, described as the remains of the productionSamson & Dalilah from 1980Hockney's Magic FluteYeargan/Bosquet Merry WidowGuillaume Tell, what's left of itSusannah, from 2014Various catches: you have to arrange for transportation. These productions can take up a lot of room and are presumably expensive to transport. Read the fine print, as the production probably […]
