As usual, there won't be a list of best or favorite recordings of 2023, because I don't make any kind of attempt to keep track of new releases - there are so many - or listen to some percentage of them. But it's been an interesting year, for sure.As you can see from the page where I link to all of my music writing, this year I wrote 25 reviews, covering 16 operas, six orchestra concerts (including one of the SFSoundBox concerts), three string quartet concerts, a concert of new and old vocal music by Trio Medieval, and Pan, a theater piece by Marcos Balter for solo flute and community chorus, brilliantly played by Claire Chase. One of those reviews covered four of Santa Fe Opera's five operas. Weirdly, my first and last reviews of the year were of works based on the story of Dido and Aeneas. In addition to the […]

Here's the most predictable cast change announcement since Bryan Hymel's run of cancellations around 2015-2019. The article title is because I told several people that I would eat an article of clothing if Anita Rachvelishvili sang these performances. I had even perused the schedules of a few prominent mezzos in June or July, but Semenchuk's wasn't one of them. She is a tremendous singer and was superb in the 2019 Paris Les Troyens, so I am happy.Mezzo-Soprano Ekaterina Semenchuk to Sing Azucena in All Performances, Replacing Anita Rachvelishvili SAN FRANCISCO, CA (August 23, 2023) — San Francisco Opera announced today a cast change for Giuseppe Verdi’s Il Trovatore, which opens Tuesday, September 12 and is the first opera of the Company’s 101st season. Mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Semenchuk will perform the role of Azucena in all performances, replacing Anita Rachvelishvili who has withdrawn for personal reasons. Semenchuk made her San Francisco Opera debut on the opening night of the […]

San Francisco Opera 2023-24
War Memorial Opera House at DuskPhoto by Lisa HirschSF Opera announced its 2023-24 season the other day; herewith the lineup, with some comments. Parts of this were known in advance because SFO announced the three contemporary works in the season announcement for 2022-23, and they have indicated a plan for MD Eun Sun Kim to conduct one Verdi and one Wagner opera each season, leading up to an eventual Ring.Fall, 2023:Opening night gala concert, conducted by Music Director Kim, with tenor Roberto Alagna and soprano Aleksandra Kurzak. Verdi, Il Trovatore. Kim/Arturo Chacon-Cruz, Angel Blue, George Petean, Anita Rachvelishvili. David McVicar production, seen here in 2009. Classic barn (and baby) burner. I see two potential issues: Chacon-Cruz doesn't strike me as having the right kind of voice for Manrico, and Rachvelishvili has been cancelling a lot owing to some health problems. This is 8 months out, so we'll see. Bates, The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs. Michael Christie/John Moore (Steve Jobs), Sasha Cooke (Laureen […]
