The Boston Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Dima Slobodeniouk, presented Edvard Grieg’s complete incidental music to Henrik Ibsen’s Peer Gynt in a theatrical adaptation conceived, written, and directed by Bill Barclay. Soprano Georgia Jarman, eight actors (playing 18 roles), and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus shared the stage. [] The post appeared first on The Boston Musical Intelligencer.

Volti, which is among the Bay Area's best small choruses, specializes in new and recent music and commissions new work on a regular basis. The last time I saw them, in fact, they performed commissioned works by Pamela Z and Carolyn Shaw. They have a long history of performing music composed by women and people of color, unlike various other musical institutions. They've got an intriguing program later this month, including a world premiere by Jens Ibsen, whose Drowned in Light was premiered by the SF Symphony in November under their Emerging Black Composers program. Davies Symphony Hall, SFPhoto by Lisa HirschThe California Festival is a celebration of new music to be held throughout the state this coming fall, from November 3-19. It's being led by - surprise - the Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, and San Diego Symphony, with their respective music directors. There are now 95 organizations in total participating. SFS has two programs, called From the Edge and To the Edge (no, I have no idea how they came up with those program names). To the Edge is on Saturday and Sunday, November 11 and 12, at Davies, with a runout to Zellerbach on Friday, November 10. The program features well-known Californian and contemporary composer Igor Stravinsky (Symphony in Three Movements), and new works by Jens Ibsen (Drowned in Light, world premiere) and oh yes, Esa-Pekka Salonen (Kinema, with clarinet soloist Carey Bell). I am glad to finally see some of Salonen's newer works appearing on […]

Salzburg Festival (5) - Katya Kabanova, 26 August 2022
[…] horizons, and indeed those of everyone else, although Kosky’s interest, not unreasonably, seemed to lie in the heroine. A large stage with nothing else to detain us: on second thoughts, one could readily have had set designs and kept the characters apart as necessary, so perhaps it was not Covid at all. Words from a programme interview lend credence to that view, Kosky saying that he did not want to ‘do Kátá Kabanova as an Ibsen or Strindberg drama – it’s not just about the family.’ He says he and his production team needed ‘to consider how we could represent this village or small town and Kátá’s feeling of isolation within this place, and at the same time concentrate on Kátá and the immediate family around her, without turning it into a chamber piece with walls, doors, tables, chairs and a samovar – which wouldn’t work anyway in the Felsenreitschule.’ […]
