'A Catalan Celebration': London Sinfonietta/Colomer - Gerhard, Magrané, García-Tomás, and Illean, 1 December 2021
Queen Elizabeth HallRoberto Gerhard: LibraJoan Magrané Figuera: Faula Raquel García-Tomás: aequae Lisa Illean: JanuariesGerhard: Leo London SinfoniettaEdmon Colomer (conductor) A miserable, rainy night seemed just the right time for the London Sinfonietta, in association with the Institut Ramon Llull, to light up the Queen Elizabeth Hall with what they called ‘A Catalan Celebration’. 2020, the year without music, marked fifty years since the death of Roberto Gerhard. It was doubly welcome, then, to have this celebration of mostly Catalan music take place in 2021, the year when music tentatively returned to our lives. To hear fine performances not only of music by Gerhard, but also works by contemporary (to us) Catalan composers, Joan Magrané Figuera and Raquel García-Tomás, as well as one by the Australian-born, London-resident Lisa Illean, would have been a splendid opportunity at any time. It also helped dispel a little of the current misery […]

Queen Elizabeth Hall, LondonTwo of the Catalan-composer’s astrological works reminded audiences of his brilliantly-coloured music in a programme that also showcased contemporary Catalan composers The 50th anniversary last year of the death of Roberto Gerhard passed almost unnoticed, at least in the UK, where the Catalan-born composer lived for the last 32 years of his life. Since Opera North staged his opera La Duenna in 1992, very few of Gerhard’s major works have been heard here; his brilliantly coloured, incident-packed scores have effectively vanished from our concert halls. Even the London Sinfonietta has hardly programmed any Gerhard since it put on an ambitious festival devoted to all the instrumental and ensemble music by him and his teacher Schoenberg in 1973, three years after his death. But it did offer a belated anniversary tribute by including Gerhard’s last ensemble pieces, Libra and Leo, in its latest concert alongside works by […]

Catalonia, Poland, Canada and more: London Sinfonietta's new season
London Sinfonietta (Photo Kevin Leighton) The London Sinfonietta's new season is brimful of new works, and of works exploring new territories whether geographical or metaphysical. The Autumn season includes two major works by Catalan composer Roberto Gerhard, Libra and Leo, both of which were premiered in 1968. Edmon Colomer conducts a programme which includes the Gerhard pieces alongside works by Catalan composers Joan Magrané Figuera and Raquel García Tomás (Huddersfield, 22/11/21, Southbank, 1/12/21). Poland is the focus for Jessica Cottis' concert which includes Krzysztof Penderecki’s Sinfonietta per archi (1992) alongside two world premieres from Wojciech Błażejczyk and Paweł Mykietyn, both commissions from the newly launched International Centre for Contemporary Music (27/4/2022). Canada is the next country, as Ilan Volkov conducts Lonely Child the master work of Canadian composer Claude Vivier, with soprano Clare Booth, alongside a new work by contemporary Canadian composer Nicole Lizée. The concert is also a […]

Late Romantic and Modern Spanish School Treasures - Vol. 1
Refreshing and elegant, the music of the Spanish masters between the last decade of the 19th century and the new horizons of modernity represents a verdant oasis of tones amid the many revolutionary personalities in those years of dramatic change. A language eager to capture the echoes of a rich folk heritage and capable to deliver this gracefully through dense chromaticism, extraordinary virtuosic gestures, colourful tonal palette and charming, often very distinctive harmonies (Turina). Some of the masterpieces presented here (and in the next 2 volumes) are must-haves, altogether, this repertoire strikes us for its consistency, scale and depth. From the "Lisztian-Chopinesque" density of this new piano school's beginnings, all the way to Montsalvatge's magnificent "classic modernism" well into the second half of the 20th century, let us enjoy some rare as well as some of the most noted recordings of classics like Albeniz's Iberia or de Falla's Noches, Granados' […]
