Here's the most predictable cast change announcement since Bryan Hymel's run of cancellations around 2015-2019. The article title is because I told several people that I would eat an article of clothing if Anita Rachvelishvili sang these performances. I had even perused the schedules of a few prominent mezzos in June or July, but Semenchuk's wasn't one of them. She is a tremendous singer and was superb in the 2019 Paris Les Troyens, so I am happy.Mezzo-Soprano Ekaterina Semenchuk to Sing Azucena in All Performances, Replacing Anita Rachvelishvili SAN FRANCISCO, CA (August 23, 2023) — San Francisco Opera announced today a cast change for Giuseppe Verdi’s Il Trovatore, which opens Tuesday, September 12 and is the first opera of the Company’s 101st season. The Barber of Seville, Iván López-Reynoso/Emily Fons, Jack Swanson, Joshua Hopkins, Kevin Burdette, Ryan Speedo Green. M. Butterfly, Carolyn Kuan/Kangmin Justin Kim, Mark Stone, Hongni Wu, Kevin Burdette, Joshua Dennis. The Tristan is a must-see for me, because Tamara Wilson and Jamie Barton are must see in those roles. Carmen: I never want to see it again, but maybe Bryan Hymel will sing all of his […]

San Francisco Opera: July Streaming
Christine Goerke as Elektra Photo by Cory Weaver / Courtesy of San Francisco Opera San Francisco Opera just announced its next round of streaming, which might as well be called Heavy Hitters of the 2010s or something like that. Nothing light or lightweight in this series. July 10: Jenufa; Jiří Bĕlohlávek; Malin Bystrom, William Burden, Karita Mattila, Scott Quin, Jill Grove. On my list of "greatest things I have ever seen," owing to the tremendous cast and conducting. From 2016. July 17: Les Troyens; Sir Donald Runnicles; Anna Caterina Antonacci, Brian Mulligan, Bryan Hymel, Philip Skinner, Nian Wang, Susan Graham, Sasha Cooke, Rene Barbara, Chong Wang, Christian Van Horn. Loved the production (mostly); on my list of "greatest things I have ever seen," owing to the tremendous cast and conducting. From 2015. July 24: Elektra; Henrik Nanasi; Christine Goerke, Adrianne Pieczonka, Michaela Martens, Alfred Walker, Robert Brubaker. Loved the production; […]
