[…] York there is just one singer selected for the finals with a short list of those on the margins - on the waiting list which we will not begin to clear before we complete the auditions in London, Gothenburg and Munich. So mid June.........But I may have some other good ones from New York today. A first prize winner in 2013 was from New York - Nadine Sierra. And the winner in 2001 was Burak Bilgili who auditioned here. He was at the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia at the time. Maybe New York will be productive again. This evening I will be at Lincoln Centre for Susanna Mällki's debut programme with the New York Philharmonic - a nice Brahms programme with the bonus of a piece by Jonathan Harvey.

Richard Bradshaw Auditorium 11:45 am May 20 2015 These two days in Torono have been varied and a huge pleasure. Yesterday evening was Il barbiere di Siviglia, in a new production by Joan Font of the Comediants Theatre Company I was especially delighted to see the Rosina of Chicagoan Cecelia Hall, former member of Lyric's Ryan Center who also appeared with COT in 2012. And of course Burak Bilgili, Neue Stimmen winner in 2001, was a splendid Don Basilio. And the excellent and most accomplished Rossinian conductor was Rory Macdonald. I had some auditions this morning and more this afternoon. Between these was a recital in the beautiful Richard Bradshaw Auditorium in the Canadian Opera Company's Four Seasons Centre. This was the last of a series of free events at which members of the COC's Ensemble Studio members show off their considerable accomplishments. Today was the turn of the gifted tenor Owen McAusland who gave […]

This Week in Toronto (May 18 - 24)
[…] the Canadian Opera Company's season, this is your last chance to catch The Barber of Seville and Bluebeard's Castle/Erwartung. I understand the final performance of Bluebeard on May 23 is sold out, but you can always try for returns on the day of performancem, but call the box office first! On May 19th and 21st, you can catch the second cast of Barber, starring Cecelia Hall (Rosina), Francisco Brito (Almaviva), Nicolay Didenko (Bartolo) and Burak Bilgili (Basilio). Joshua Hopkins (Figaro), indisposed the last couple of shows, hopefully will be back. Rory Macdonald conducts. http://www.coc.ca/Home.aspx Russian mezzo Ekaterina Gubanova (Photo: en.wikipedia.org) There are three very interesting, and free, noon hour concerts at the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre this week. Russian mezzo Ekaterina Gubanova, currently wrapping up her appearance as Judith in Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle, will sing the dramatically riveting Mussorgsky's song cycle Songs and Dances of Death, as well as three […]

This Week in Toronto (May 4 - 10)
[…] Seasons Centre, with additional performances this week on May 8th and 10th. http://www.coc.ca/PerformancesAndTickets/1415Season/BluebeardErwartung.aspx In the meantime, The Barber of Seville continues its marathon 12-performance run, plus the special Ensemble Studio Performance on May 15. This week sees the premiere of the second cast on May 9th. American mezzo Cecelia Hall is Rosina (she actually debuts on May 7), and Argentinean tenor Francisco Brito is Almaviva. Others include Nikolay Didenko (Dr. Bartolo) and Turkish bass Burak Bilgili (Basilio). Of this group, Biligi is the only returning artist, having previously sung a very funny Basilio with the COC back in 2008. Canadian baritone Josh Hopkins continues as the only Figaro. http://www.coc.ca/PerformancesAndTickets/1415Season/BarberofSeville.aspx Soprano Aviva Fortunata On Tuesday May 5 at the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre at noon is a recital featuring three members of the COC Ensemble Studio, sopranos Karine Boucher and Aviva Fortunata, and tenor Owen McCausland. They sing songs […]
