Verdi's Otello musical highlight: Desdemona’s Willow Song and Ave Maria
[…] Domingo , an iconic Otello, made several recordings of the opera, of which the 1978 version under James Levine also features the superb Iago of Sherrill Milnes and Renata Scotto ’s radiant Desdemona. Domingo’s 1994 recording , conducted by Myung-Whun Chung , includes Sergei Leiferkus as a deliciously sinister Iago and Cheryl Studer as an impassioned Desdemona. Other fine recordings include Georg Solti ’s from 1977 , with Margaret Price ’s vocal beauty and Carlo Cossutta ’s heroic stamina ideal for Desdemona and Otello; and the 1960 recording conducted by Italian maestro Tullio Serafin , with Jon Vickers a passionate Otello and the great Tito Gobbi a jocularly macabre Iago. Among the multiple filmed offerings are the Metropolitan Opera’s 1996 recording with Domingo, Renée Fleming and James Morris and The Royal Opera’s 1992 recording with Solti, Domingo, Kiri Te Kanawa and Leiferkus. Zeffirelli ’s dramatic film of the opera with […]

Fifty shades of gold
[…] the Lyric Opera of Chicago. Since it was taking place on my birthday and Chicago is in easy driving distance from Ohio, how could I not go? As poor college students, we got the cheapest seats in that cavernous place and I got to hear Mirella Freni, Luciano Pavarotti, Nicolai Ghiaurov, Alfredo Kraus, Leontyne AND Margaret Price for the very first time. And it proved to be the only time I witnessed Jon Vickers, Carlo Cossutta and Geraint Evans live. Still being pretty green, I realized only in retrospect that the most special part of that afternoon were the retired artists who introduced each musical selection—great singers whom I never could have heard perform—Tito Gobbi, Giuseppe di Stefano, Bidu Sayão, Eleanor Steber, Leopold Simoneau, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf (yes, even her little speech was terribly mannered) and more. During the long drive home, my head was spinning! I probably didn’t even know […]

[…] Frizza and singer Andrea Silvestrelli (Oroveso), and it seemed from the conversation that the production at Lyric was definitely going to be focused on the music, which was nice to hear (glad that it actually was true too!). This opera – classic bel canto – is one of my favorite operas of all time…I might have five or six versions of it on my iTunes? (A Muti recording from the 70’s, with Caballe, Cossotto, and Cossutta in Vienna tops my list.) Just like Nabucco, practically every song in the opera is just a pleasure to listen to, and when it’s performed well, there are truly some divine moments. This was definitely the case for today’s performance at Lyric, as the main cast (Sondra Radvanovsky, Elizabeth DeShong, Russell Thomas, and Andrea Silvestrelli) were totally on point. A fantastic way to start the week! In other news, Lyric will be revealing its […]
