Recent Releases No. 63 (CD Reviews)
by Karl NehringBach: Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 (Reimagined by Chad Kelly). Rachel Podger, violin; Brecon Baroque (Huw Daniel, violin; Jane Rogers, Viola; Alexander Rolton; cello; Jan Spencer, violone; Katy Bircher, flute; Daniel Lanthier, oboe; Leo Duarte, oboe; Inga Klaucke, bassoon; Chad Kelly, harpsichord). Channel Classics CCS5A44923Typically, when we are reviewing a new release of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, we are considering yet another recording by a pianist. Recently, for example, the exciting young Icelandic piano virtuoso has released a recording on DG (although we have been promised a CD for review, we have not yet received it; perhaps we will have to resort to streaming it.) Then follow the usual comparisons to the touchstone recordings by Gould, Perahia, et al. – plus perhaps some discussion of the relative merits of piano v. harpsichord performances of the work. Here, however, we have something completely different: a “reimagining” of the piece for a small Baroque ensemble. In the […]

Paraguayan classical guitarist Berta Rojas has released a new album, Legado which celebrates two trailblazing women classical guitarists, Ida Presti and Maria Luisa Anido. The disc features music by Presti and Anido alongside tombeaux by John Duarte, Gilbert Biberian and Sergio Assad. The video features Rojas playing John Duarte's Idylle pour Ida Born outside of Paris, Ida Presti (1924-1967) was a child prodigy, giving her first full concert at the age of 10. "When I listened to her, I was aware that heaven had bestowed to her the gift of musical communication", Segovia commented. Pushed by her father, success came early but his death in 1938 and the advent of World War II, limited widespread travel and exposure. In 1952, she married fellow guitarist Alexandre Lagoya and the pair became one of the most celebrated duos in classical guitar, perhaps overshadowing her solo accomplishments. Argentinian-born Maria Luisa Anido (1907-1996) drew inspiration for […]

This year the Handel Festival Halle is celebrating its centenary. That first festival in Handel's birthplace in 1922 is one of the defining moments of the modern revival of interest in Handel's wider music. The Hallisches Händelfest in 1922 concluded with a performance of Handel's Orlando, and the 2022 centenary festival, which runs from 27 May to 12 June 2022 will being with a new production of Orlando conducted by Christian Curnyn and directed by Walter Sutcliffe, the new artistic director of Halle Opera. The 1922 festival also included Susanna and Semele, both of which are being performed in 2022 along with a wide range of other works. After that first festival, the Halle Handel Society was formed in 1925 and a second festival took place in 1929 with a third in 1935. The fourth festival took place in 1949, and since 1952 the festival has become annual. Other operas […]

Haydn's keyboard concertos do not get anything like the exposure that Mozart's do. This is partly because the list of Haydn's concertos is rather tricky, only a few are regarded as genuine, but also because after the 1780s he stopped writing them. Some commentators see this as a response to his hearing Mozart's mature piano concertos and deciding to take a step back from the genre. Haydn had a great admiration for his younger colleague's music and in a letter of 1787 said: ‘If I could only impress on the soul of every friend of music, and on high personages in particular, how inimitable are Mozart’s works, how profound, how musically intelligent, how extraordinarily sensitive! … It enrages me to think that this incomparable Mozart is not yet engaged in some imperial or royal court! Forgive me if I lose my head. But I love this man so dearly.’ There […]
