Nostalgia: Norm and Studs
[…] afternoon. It was listening to that, that I got to know who Studs was. Garrulous is the first word that comes mind: verbose, sentimental and partisan. Analytical, precise and balanced the man was not. What made the show worth listening to – which it was pretty often – were the people Studs induced to come by. For good or ill, you weren’t likely to hear John Jacob Niles, Paul Goodman, Gilbert Highet, or John Ciardi hold forth at length anywhere else on the dial. Studs didn’t always have a guest though. Sometimes he’d just read. Even though I learned later that he’d taken his nickname from Chicago’s most famous fictional character, Studs Lonigan, I don’t remember his quoting James T. Farrell.
