Joseph Ermend Bonnal Fauré Ravel Guy Ropartz Koechlin 1880 1937 1944
The French organist and composer Joseph-Ermend Bonnal +••.••(...)) was born and died in Bordeaux, but worked as organist in Paris, Boulogne and other locations. He studied composition under Fauré at the Paris Conservatoire, but on the evidence of piano music by him that I have seen, Ravel was a significant influence, and maybe Guy Ropartz and Koechlin too. This attractive piece, published in 1937, was dedicated to the composer's son, Francis - but given the capital E of 'Enfant' on the title page, I wonder if the baby Jesus might be the subject. I think the word 'Complainte' here is best translated as 'lament' or 'elegy'. / / Played by Phillip Sear (http•••) (Email: •••@••• WhatsApp: (http•••) )
