Riverfront, NewportArts Council of Wales’s decision to axe its funding for Mid Wales Opera means this effective and cogent production is likely their last on this scaleWith the peremptory axing of all its funding last September, Mid Wales Opera has already been dealt a deathblow by the Arts Council of Wales. The company’s strong and sterling new Verdi staging – now confirmed as its last full-scale production – makes the council’s decision look all the more ludicrous.Fielding a cast of 17, and the 16 musicians of Ensemble Cymru plus a community chorus, this may not be full-scale Verdi, but there is absolutely no compromise on integrity. With some fine musical characterisation from the principals as well as those in cameo roles, and a particularly blazing finale to act one, there is a wonderful sense of a defiant upholding of MWO values by artistic director/designer Richard Studer and music director Jonathan Lyness. She spoke briefly and with customary professionalism: she had had a wonderful career, done what she wanted to, and now it was time to say […]

Borough Theatre, AbergavennyBerlioz’s Shakespearean opera is stripped to the bone for four instruments and six singers, but the show is slick and spirited, with sopranos Lorena Paz Nieto and Monica McGhee standoutsHector Berlioz was obsessed to the point of adulation with Shakespeare. Yet when he decided to base what would be his last opera on Much Ado about Nothing and write his own libretto, he had no compunction in making big changes, removing various characters and replacing the clowns with Somarone, a buffo invention of his own. Berlioz thought of his opera as a caprice, “written with the point of a needle”.For their bright and shiny new SmallStages tour, Mid Wales Opera and artistic director Richard Studer take their cue from the composer and further strip the comedy to the bone for an ensemble of six singers. Music director Jonathan Lyness has filleted the score to a quartet of instruments […]
