Don Giovanni, San Francisco Opera, Media Round-Up
[…] coincidence that the best production of this I've ever seen took the opera seriously and didn't play it for laughs. If you're going to laugh at this opera, where most of the jokes are about sexual assault or class, you should be laughing nervously. I'm especially disappointed because honestly, this was about the best-sung Don Giovanni that I have seen at SFO. A good chunk of the cast was new (Etienne Dupuis, Nicole Car, Adela Zaharia, Cody Quattlebaum) and they were all good to terrific. Zaharia sounded like a dramatic soprano, with a big, dark voice, so imagine my surprise at finding Lucia and other coloratura roles in her bio. Donna Anna can accommodate a range of voice types, I guess. Dupuis was not quite as magnetic as in the Met Don Carlos, and I feel like he has an even better DG in him, but he was fine. I liked Nicole Car […]

[…] really decisive moments such as the orchestrally scaled climax to the first section (3'30") or the frenzied close to the scherzo section, which introduces an unmistakable quotation from Verklärte Nacht in a gesture of fulfilment typical of the proud but generous Zemlinsky. The coupling is as unique as it is insightful, and comparisons would seem beside the point: it's an outstanding album.Source: Peter Quantrill (gramophone.co.uk) Georg Frideric Handel : Brockes-Passion, HWV 48Elizabeth Watts, sopranoRobert Murray, tenorCody Quattlebaum, bass-baritoneGwilym Bowen, tenor Tim Mead, countertenor Ruby Hughes, sopranoNicky Spence, tenorRachael Lloyd, sopranoMorgan Pearse, baritoneOrchestra and Choir of the Academy of Ancient MusicDirector & harpsichord: Richard EgarrRecorded at Henry Wood Hall, London, on April 11 & 17-18, 2019, and at Barbican Hall, London, on April 19, 2019Released on October 4, 2019 by Academy of Ancient MusicThis new release on the Academy of Ancient Music's in-house label is the culmination of a two-year exploration of Handel's little-performed passion setting. A work of scholarship and a fine performance: Academy of Ancient Music's new recording of Handel's Brockes Passion
[…] for the recording) and the CD set includes an impressive book which explores the new research in fascinating detail. The recording itself is similarly comprehensive, with the complete Brockes Passion in German over two CDs along with a third CD containing alternative versions of four items, and a recording Charles Jennens' unfinished English version of the work. The recording features an impressive line of up soloists directed by Richard Egarr, Robert Murray (Evangelist), Cody Quattlebaum (Jesus), Elizabeth Watts (Daughter of Zion), Ruby Hughes (Faithful Soul), Rachael Lloyd, Tim Mead (Judas), Gwilym Bowen (Peter), Nicky Spence (Faithful Soul) and Morgan Pearse, along with the Choir of Academy of Ancient Music.Handel wrote his setting of the passion by Barthold Heinrich Brockes in 1716 and it was performed in Hamburg in 1719, under the direction of Handel's friend and erstwhile colleague at Hamburg Opera, Johannes Matheson. It proved popular and would have […]
