Ten Questions with Charles Eaton
Charles Eaton, Baritone Moralès - Carmen 1. Where were you born? Where were you raised? I was born and raised in Storrs, CT. It's the town that has the University of Connecticut, where my grandparents, parents, and all of my siblings (including myself!) went to college. 2. If you weren’t a singer, what profession would you be in? A dream job was always to be a veterinarian, but in retrospect, I'm not sure I'd have the nerves for it (too many sick pups). 3. The first opera I was ever in was… I was an eager chorister in Die Fledermaus at the University of Connecticut, before I really knew what opera was all about. 4. My favorite opera is… I absolutely love The Crucibleby Robert Ward. I think the music and drama is spectacular. The Marriage of Figaro is pretty high up on my list as well. 5. My favorite food […]

All they are saying is give peace a chance
Two of the greatest opera composers of the 20th century both happened to be gay and ardent pacifists. We examine their musical commentaries this week with Der Prinz von Homburg by Hans Werner Henze and Owen Wingrave by Benjamin Britten. Henze is, for me, perhaps the most underrated, underperformed composer in recent memory. His catalogue of operas contains some masterworks – Der junge Lord, Boulevard Solitude, Elegy for Young Lovers, Pollicino, and Das verratene Meer just to name a few, all of which I’ve seen – but his symphonic works are equally thrilling. Having missed New York City Opera’s production of Der junge Lord in the early 1970s, I became acquainted with Henze music when his third symphony was utilized as the score for Glen Tetley’s ballet Gemini when I attended its American premiere by American Ballet Theater in 1975 with Cynthia Gregory, Martine van Hamel, Jonas Kage, and […]

Berkeley/Bay Area Meet-up, Shut up, Listen up Groups
I’m signed UP for every Meet-up under the sun trying to connect up with the Bay area mystical, meditation-al, musical, Muse-inspired community. This includes my membership in Bay area International Creative souls, Shut up and Write! Listen Up and don’t speak up– Berkeley Writer’s Circle. (By-laws: three mandatory visits minus a double-spaced manuscript) “Silence is Golden” through the initiation period. I can’t share, just stare. They want to head off being stood-UP by an UPp-ity new member who wants to UPstage the regulars. What?? Should I go back to Shut Up and Write? sandwiched between two Mac Books at Mo Joe’s Cafe beyond dreary University Avenue? But I was re-routed to the Berkeley Circle for group sharing by a Shut UP leader, so I cancelled my shape UP session at the Y. That was before the Shut Up Moderator sent me off to SF Writers Group, with […]
