Detroit mourns its opera founder
David DiChiera, founder of Michigan Opera Theatre, has died of pancreatic cancer, the theatre has announced. He retired last year at 82 as the cancer took hold. You can read the story of his life here.

“DiChiera was small of stature and surprisingly soft-spoken for a man who came to have such an enormous impact on Detroit’s cultural landscape. Indeed, the word people used most often to describe him was ‘kind,’ followed quickly by more grandiose words like ‘visionary,’ ‘groundbreaker’ and ‘risk-taker.’ He was all that and more.”

Detroit hails a departing founder
Detroit Opera House paid tribute Friday night to its founder Dr David DiChiera, who is bowing out with pancreatic cancer.
