Freya Waley-Cohen: Spell Book - Héloïse Werner, Manchester Collective - Barbican (Photo: César Vásquez Altamirano)On 1 February 2024, Manchester Collective, Héloïse Werner (soprano), Fleur Barron (mezzo-soprano), Katie Bray (mezzo-soprano) and Céline Saout (harp) presented the world premiere of Freya Waley-Cohen's complete Spell Book at the Barbican in advance of the song cycle's release on NMC Recordings in October 2024. The three pieces along add to 80 minutes, throw in a 20- to 30-minute intermission and we are close to two hours. The concert concluded at 9:24 pm.It is difficult to understand how these three pieces fit together as a program. Joel Thompson is in his 30s, still in school (getting a doctorate at Yale). Sadly, though, Maestro Barenboim, had to pull out of the production because of severe health issues, a great blow to all but so disappointing for Barenboim in his 80th year. All change, please! Therefore, it’s musical chairs at Staatsoper with Maestro Barenboim, who has held […]
