Revisiting Staatsoper Berlin’s Ring cycle proved a thrilling experience: Dmitri Tcherniakov's production returns to Unter den Linden with conductor Philippe Jordan
Wagner: Das Rheingold - Staatsoper Berlin, 2022 (Photo: Monika Rittershaus)Wagner: The Ring of the Nibelungen; Tomasz Konieczny, Rolando Villazón, Johannes Martin Kränzle, Robert Watson, Vida Miknevičiūtė, René Pape, Claudia Mahnke, Anja Kampe, Andreas Schager, Stephan Rügamer, dir: Dmitri Tcherniakov; Staatskapelle Berlin, cond: Phillipe Jordan; Staatsopernchor, dir: Dani Juris, Staatsoper Berlin, Germany Reviewed by Tony Cooper, 26 March 2024True to form, Dmitri Tcherniakov drifts miles away from Wagner’s original intentions but, nonetheless, comes up with an interesting and extremely rewarding productionThe current Ring at Staatsoper Berlin came into being in October 2022 directed by Russian director Dmitri Tcherniakov due to be conducted by Daniel Barenboim. Sadly, though, Maestro Barenboim, had to pull out of the production because of severe health issues, a great blow to all but so disappointing for Barenboim in his 80th year. All change, please! Takács Quartet Debuts Flow
The renowned Takács Quartet has a zest for new music and unconventional partnerships. They’ve collaborated with bandoneon standout Julien Labro, composer and The National vocalist Bryce Dessner, vocalist Clarice Assad, and actors Philip Seymour Hoffman and Meryl Streep. For its February 16th Celebrity Series concert at Jordan Hall [tickets HERE], the foursome offers Nokuthula Ngwenyama’s Flow sandwiched between Haydn’s “Sunrise” quartet and the second of Beethoven’s Razumovskys. In Flow, Harvard Divinity School graduate Ngwenyama embraces the cosmos…or lets it embrace her. BMInt spoke with her and and Takács violinist Harumi Rhodes. FLE: We first met in 1999 when you gave a super viola recital at Harvard Musical Association. You probably don’t remember the event, but surely the baked beans, Welsh rabbit and ale must have traumatized you. Late romantic at Wigmore Hall: Simon Callaghan in Cyril Scott's sonata
Percy Grainger and Cyril Scott, photographed in Frankfurt-am-Main, c. 1900 by Theod Bänder (Photo from Grainger Museum, University of Melbourne)Debussy, Stravinsky, Grainger, Cyril Scott: Piano Sonata No. 1 Op. 66; Simon Callaghan; Wigmore HallReviewed 3 February 2024Viewed as ground-breaking by contemporaries, Scott's style languished in the later 20th-century but Simon Callaghan revived the piano sonata in a masterly performanceIt is often forgotten that Percy Grainger, for all his personal eccentricities, was a major pianistic talent [just try his 1925 recording of Chopin's Piano Sonata No. 3 on YouTube] and Grainger highly rated Cyril Scott's Piano Sonata No. 1. Scott is a fascinating figure, an important presence in English music during the first quarter of the 20th century, his late-romantic style gradually went out of fashion and his own eccentricities including a fondness for mysticism and the occult, did not help.Possibly for the first time since Scott premiered it there in […]
