It encompasses the great conductor’s complete recordings for that label on 26 CDs, all remastered from scratch and presented in original jacket facsimiles. Tchaikovsky: Symphonies Nos. 1-6 (CD review)
Also, Manfred Symphony; Slavonic March; Francesca da Rimini; Capriccio italien; 1812 Overture; The Storm; Romeo and Juliet, fantasy-overture. Bernard Haitink, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Philips 442 061-2 (6 CD set).By John J. PuccioThere are four of five sets of Tchaikovsky symphonies I can recommend to the buyer who is considering a complete cycle by a single conductor. On balance, however, I prefer this older analogue set with Bernard Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (still available on Philips and now on Decca), both for its reasoned, yet vigorous, performances and for its warm, wide-ranging sound. The other recommendable sets include Jansons's digital set on Chandos, Muti's analogue set on Warner/EMI, Markevitch's budget-priced set on Philips, and Jarvi’s set on BIS, among several others. So why the Haitink set? Tchaikovsky: The Six Symphonies & Manfred - Oleg Caetani
[…] of the Melbourne Symphony - 2005 to 2010. For me, all of these performances are near the top of my list of preferred recordings of these symphonies - with the real standout being Symphony No.3. Previous to hearing this performance, I always thought that symphony very weak compared to the others but this performance transforms it for me. Almost as fine is the Manfred - although not quite displacing the recording by his papa, Igor Markevitch, with the London Symphony from top spot. Although recorded in concert, the audience is unobtrusive and recording quality is excellent.with lots of orchestral detail. The Melbourne Symphony play extremely well for Caetani with whom they obviously had a very good relationship. Unfortunately, as usual with ABC Classics, the digital download comes without any booklet. Download from MEGA.
