Czech Night with the Berlin Philharmonic
VbThe Berlin Philharmonic is one of the three top orchestras in the world today. And I have for you today a recording of an outdoor concert that is a total success whenever it takes place. Details are as follows: Waldbühne 2016 from Berlin: Czech Night Recorded live at the Waldbuehne Berlin, 2016, directed by Henning Kasten. The Dvorak: Symphony No. 6 in D major, Op. 60 Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 53, with Lisa Batiashvili (violin) Smetana: Má Vlast: Vltava All performed by the Berliner Philharmoniker, Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducting. What kind of music could be better suited for the Berliner Philharmoniker’s annual Waldbühne concert than Czech music? It’s always passionate and sure to lift everyone’s spirits. Only very rarely does a young talent ascend to ‘world stardom’, but one of the few who can be considered an international superstar while still belonging to the new generation of conductors is Yannick […]

Now Air Berlin makes you pay extra for a violin
The German budget airline has surreptitiously changed its carry-on policy and is enforcing new rules. As of last month, they want you to buy an extra seat to take a small instrument on board. Below are complaints from two violinists: Adrien La Marca: For all my musician friends playing string instruments, I invite you all to blacklist AIR BERLIN from your flying companies since they changed their policy with instruments last december (violin and viola included), making people buy an extra seat if they want to travel with their instrument in the plane. Like maybe many of you have experienced it (usually cellist), you have to face people not willing to understand and happy to use their power not letting you entering the plane. No matter arguing about the value of instruments and that you can’t check it in, how many times you flew or explaining clearly that the instrument […]

Collective Clanging and Controlled Chaos
[…] least at first hearing) any hint of harmonic implication. It takes a few minutes to drop into this stark and rather unforgiving soundworld, at which time one’s attention turns inward, toward one’s own breathing, toward the process of acknowledging and managing one’s expectations. Incessantly ringing, harsh clusters of dissonance resemble the shock of a metal pot dropped on a kitchen floor. A ravishing flute and string bass duo (played expertly by Ashley Stanley and Tristan Kasten-Krause) began to stick out, chromatically planing through microtones. The points where the gliding instruments seemed to “sync” up–or at least become aware of one another–felt like a small but important breakthrough to a mind desperate for elements of consistency and an indication that a human is behind all of this–otherwise could a computer have conceived this forbidding, barren schematic? There’s an otherness to the aesthetic, inspired by Cage’s trip to a Japanese rock garden, […]
