Gustavo Núñez (bassoon)/Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Spanjaard/Olthuis (Channel Classics)Gustavo Núñez is principal bassoon of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and on the evidence of the concertante pieces on this disc, he's a player of jaw-dropping agility and effortlessly suave tone. Most of the works here, though, are pleasantly unremarkable – both the Capricho by his former colleague Kees Olthuis (who also conducts three of the four works here), and the Concertino di Verano by Núñez's fellow Uruguayan Jaurés Lamarque-Pons are stylish neoclassical showpieces, while Villa-Lobos's evocation of a Pernambucan dance has oodles of charm but no more musical substance. Sofia Gubaidulina's Concerto for Bassoon and Low Strings, though, is a far more gritty, weightier proposition.
