Icelandic experimentalism: Guðmundur Steinn Gunnarsson's Sinfonia explores non-traditional tunings and alternative notations
Guðmundur Steinn Gunnarsson Sinfonia; Ensemble Fengjastrútur; Carrier Records Reviewed by Robert Hugill on 24 June 2020 Star rating: 4.0 (★★★★) Icelandic experimental music which is the distillation of the the composer's long experience with non-traditional tunings and alternative notations, imbuing the music with freedom, anarchism, energy and humourThe Icelandic composer and performer Guðmundur Steinn Gunnarsson is best known as being a founding member of the Slátur collective, an experimental arts organisation in Reykjavík. His interest in non-linear musical pulse (without grid or straight line) has led him to create his own notation. On his website, Gunnarsson describes it as a need to 'incorporate digital dynamic screen scores or animated notation (or related digital methods) to express his inability to adapt to the convenient society.'. This new disc of Guðmundur Steinn Gunnarsson's Sinfonia on Carrier Records, performed by Ensemble Fengjastrútur, might be a major performance of […]

A new recording of Handel's first version of Messiah (Dublin 1742) with a largely German speaking cast
Handel Messiah; Dorothee Mields, Benno Schachtner, Benedikt Kristjansson, Tobias Berndt, Gaechinger Cantorei, Hans-Christoph Rademann; Accentus Reviewed by Robert Hugill on 1 April 2020 Star rating: 4.0 (★★★★) The quirky first, Dublin version of Handel's masterpiece from a German choir with a long history of performing Baroque musicAnyone with a moderately long memory will associate the name of the Gaechinger Cantorey with the conductor Helmut Rilling who directed the choir (then called the Gächinger Kantorei) for several decades and developed an impressive pedigree in Baroque music albeit in a style which was larger scale and less attuned to period practice than is the case nowadays. Founded in 1954 by Rilling, since the 2013 the ensemble has been directed by Hans-Christoph Rademann and the choir was refounded and re-named as a smaller ensemble with a period instrument orchestra, rather more in the contemporary historically informed style. Whilst Bach remains the […]

Reverie - Icelandic art songs
Songs by Sigvaldi Kaldalóns, Árni Thorsteinson, Gunnsteinn Ólafsson, Hreiðar Ingi Þorsteinsson; Egill Árni Pálsson, Kristinn Örn Kristinsson; Fermata Reviewed by Robert Hugill on 22 January 2019 Star rating: 4.0 (★★★★) Something of a discovery, a disc of Icelandic art songs ranging from the 19th century to the contemporarySome time ago I received an email from the Icelandic tenor Egill Árni Pálsson enquiring whether I was interested in his recent disc of Icelandic song. Now, I have to admit that my knowledge of Icelandic music is rather patchy, but whilst in Iceland in 2016 we attended a short recital of Icelandic song at Harpa in Reykjavik [see my article]. Intended for tourists, it was an English language programme designed to introduced music which would be familiar to most Icelandic people. So my interest was piqued. This disc Leiðsla (Reverie) from Fermata, features Egill Árni Pálsson with pianist Kristinn Örn Kristinsson, […]
